Biomes are a fundamental part of life dynamics on Earth; they represent a specific combination of plants, animals, and microorganisms adapted to certain environments. Each biome is unique in terms of biodiversity, and human activities can have significant impacts on these fragile ecosystems.

In this project, we will explore the main biomes of the world, from species-rich tropical forests to the icy tundras of the Arctic. We will understand how each biome functions, what types of life it supports, and what threats it faces in the modern world.

Introduction

The study of the world's biomes is a matter of great importance not only for Geography but also for Biology and for understanding the environmental threats we face today. Each biome is a complex mosaic of life, with its own plant and animal species, as well as its own climatic and geological conditions.

The concept of biome, its classification, and distribution around the world are key topics in this project. Additionally, we will address the adaptations that allow flora and fauna to survive in each biome and the impacts of human activities on them.

Understanding the diversity of biomes on our planet is essential for the development of effective conservation and management policies, making this project an adventure across the planet in search of knowledge and awareness.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Biomes of the World: A Virtual Expedition

Project Objective:

Explore the diversity of biomes around the world through a virtual expedition, understand the geographical, biological, and socio-environmental aspects that define each of them, and point out the main anthropogenic impacts.

Detailed Project Description:

In groups of 3 to 5 students, you will embark on a journey of discovery and learning, taking on the role of field researchers and reporters. Each group will be responsible for two biomes and must produce a multimedia presentation and a detailed report.

Required Materials:

• Internet access
• Computer
• Presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.)
• Material for writing the report

Detailed Step-by-Step for the Activity:

1. Define the biomes that will be researched by the group.
2. Start researching about the biome(s). Use the suggested online resources and any others you wish.
3. Look for information regarding: geographical and climatic characteristics, main flora and fauna, human populations inhabiting the biome, present socio-economic activities, and main environmental impacts.
4. Include photos, videos, graphics, and maps that illustrate the researched biome.
5. Prepare a multimedia presentation on the investigated biomes, addressing all the mentioned topics.
6. Write a detailed report of the study conducted, which will serve as the written document of the project.
7. Present the work to the class, with each group member participating in the presentation.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of the project, each group must have produced and be prepared to present a multimedia presentation on the researched biomes and a detailed report.

Multimedia Presentation: It should be informative and engaging, containing graphics, maps, and images, as well as texts written by the group members. It should cover all aspects of the investigated biome, including geography, climate, flora, fauna, socio-economic activities, and impacts.

Report: The writing of this document should be consistent and well-organized, clearly containing the following chapters:

• Introduction: with the project context and the relevance of studying the chosen biomes;
• Development: Describing the biomes, their characteristics, diversity, threats, and peculiarities. Methodology used and discussion of the results obtained.
• Conclusion: Learnings and conclusions drawn about the biome and the project as a whole.
• Bibliography: with the indication of all information sources used in the work.

The report should be a direct reflection of the research, compilation, and analysis work carried out by the students during the project. Therefore, the more dedication in all stages, the richer and deeper the final document will be.
