Contextualization

Industrialization is one of the main engines of the modern economy. It provides consumer goods, generates jobs, and has a significant impact on the way we live and shape our world. Since the first Industrial Revolution in 18th century England, the organization and processes of industrial production have undergone several transformations. Consequently, industries can be classified in different ways, according to such characteristics.

A common method is to categorize industries according to the products they manufacture, such as food, automotive, petrochemical industries, among others. Another way of differentiating them is based on their stages in the production chain - capital goods industry (or basic industry), intermediate goods industry and consumer goods industry. There are also classifications based on size (micro, small, medium and large industries) or geographical distribution (frontier industry, traditional industry, high-tech industry).

However, all of these classifications are not watertight and should be understood within a broader context. For example, an automotive industry can be at the same time a large industry, a consumer goods industry and a high-tech industry. The classifications serve as tools to help us understand the complexity and diversity of industrial production.

Industries have a profound influence on the distribution of the population, the configuration of cities, the generation of wealth and people's living conditions. They also have a significant impact on the environment and the sustainability of our planet. Understanding the different classifications of industries is an important step towards understanding these broader processes and making informed choices about the kind of world we want to build.

We recommend that students initiate the study by consulting the book Geografia Geral e do Brasil - Volume Único by João Carlos Moreira and Eustáquio de Sene, available at the school's library. In addition, the websites Mundo Educação and Brasil Escola provide a variety of articles and teaching resources on the subject, as do the videos of the Youtube channel "Geografia Total com o Prof. Jubilut". These materials will help deepen the understanding of industry classifications and their social, economic, and environmental implications.

Practical Activity: "From Concept to Reality: Understanding Industries"

Project Objective:

This project aims to provide students with the opportunity to apply and connect their knowledge about the different classifications of industries in a practical and meaningful way.

Detailed project description:

In this project, students will be encouraged to "leave the school walls" to explore their immediate surroundings or even more distant areas to conduct an analysis of the industries present in their community or region. The task consists of identifying, analyzing, and presenting an industry of their choice based on the criteria for classifying the industries learned in the classroom.

Required materials:

• Computer with internet access
• Camera (can be your cell phone)
• Notebook and pen
• Maps of the region (Google Maps can be a useful tool here)

Activity step by step:

1. Formation of Groups: Students should organize themselves into groups of 3 to 5 people.

2. Choice of Industry: Each group must choose a local industry to analyze. The choice can be based on proximity, the group members' personal interests, or the industry's importance to the community.

3. Initial Research: With the help of online resources, books, and/or interviews, students should research background information about the chosen industry. This information should include, but not be limited to: the type of products or services it offers, its size, its position in the production chain, and other characteristics relevant to the industry's classification.

4. Industry Visit: If possible, students should visit the industry to gather more information and take pictures. If it is not possible to make a visit, students can contact industry representatives and request information and/or photos.

5. Industry Analysis: Based on the information gathered, students should analyze and discuss their findings, comparing them with the theoretical concepts on industry classification. In these discussions, students should reflect on who benefits from the existence of this industry, who is harmed, what its socio-environmental impacts are, among others.

6. Report Production: The group should then create a report following the structure of: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

• The Introduction should contextualize the choice of the industry and the relevance of this study, presenting the industry and its importance to the community.

• In the Development, the students should present in detail the classification of the chosen industry based on the studied concepts. This should be the largest segment of the report and should include the explanation of the concepts related to the classification of industries, the description of the methodology used in the research and analysis of the industry, including the visit and/or interviews carried out, and the discussion of the obtained results. The photos collected in the industry or provided by the industry should be included here, together with explanatory captions.

• The Conclusions should summarize the main points of the work, the lessons learned, and the conclusions about the classification of the chosen industry, as well as its impact on the community and the environment.

• The Bibliography should list all the sources of information used in the research, from the consulted websites and books to the people interviewed.

7. Presentation to the Class: Each group will present its report to the class. The students should be prepared to answer questions and participate in a discussion about their results.

Remember: The process is as important as the final product! We want you to learn how to research, analyze, discuss and draw conclusions based on your findings, not just to produce a report.

The project delivery consists of the submission of the complete written report and the oral presentation to the class. The group that is able to adequately identify and analyze the classification of the chosen industry, effectively associating theory to practice, will have successfully fulfilled the project's objective.
