We are living in a time where things change very rapidly. The ways we work, communicate, and live are constantly evolving, and all of this is the result of the 4.0 Revolution, or the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution. This is the central theme of our project and vital for our understanding of current means of production and their implications in different spheres of life, including the geographical one.

The 4.0 Revolution is marked by the widespread use of technology, with automation and digitalization playing a major role in it. Cloud computing, artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things, and many other technological advances are the engines of this revolution. They are transforming the way industries operate, creating new business models, and altering work relationships.

It is also important to highlight that this revolution is not limited to the industrial sector. It is present in our daily lives, in the way we interact with the world and with each other. Digital technologies are reshaping society at all levels, from how we communicate and consume to how we learn and work.

The relevance of studying the 4.0 Revolution in Geography lies in the fact that the adoption of these new technologies has direct and indirect impacts on space, time, and place. It influences everything from the infrastructure and organization of cities to the global distribution of work and production, bringing up issues about urbanization, migration, economic and socio-environmental sustainability, spatial inequality, among others.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Mapping the 4.0 Revolution"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to allow students to understand in a more profound way the geographical aspects related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution or 4.0 Revolution.

Detailed Project Description

Students should first divide into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be responsible for researching a specific sector of economic activity (e.g., agriculture, industry, services) and the impact of the 4.0 Revolution on this sector in a specific geographical region.

After the research, each group should create a digital map demonstrating the changes that have occurred in that region and sector due to the 4.0 Revolution, containing information such as: technological adaptations, changes in work structure, spatial distribution changes, socio-environmental implications, among others.

Required Materials

• Internet access for research.
• Digital mapping software for map creation. (Google My Maps, ArcGIS, QGIS, etc)

Detailed Step-by-Step

1. Research: Each group should start an in-depth research on the impact of the 4.0 Revolution on the chosen sector of economic activity and geographical region. Students should use online and offline resources, including books, articles, documentaries, podcasts, etc.

2. Map Creation: With the collected information, the group should collaboratively create a digital map showing the changes that have occurred in the chosen region and sector due to the 4.0 Revolution. The map should contain textual and visual information (images, graphics, etc).

3. Report Writing: Simultaneously, the group should start writing the report.

   • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, specification of the chosen sector and geographical region, relevance of the research, and project objective;
   • Development: Explanation of the theory used, discussion of the impacts of the 4.0 Revolution on the chosen sector and region, detailed description of the map creation process, and presentation of the results obtained;
   • Conclusions: Reflection on the learnings obtained, critical analysis of the results, and discussion of the implications of the 4.0 Revolution for the researched sector and region;
   • Bibliography: List of references used during the research and map creation.

4. Project Presentation: Finally, each group should prepare a 10-15 minute presentation to discuss their map and the conclusions drawn from their research.

Project Deliverables

• An interactive digital map demonstrating the impacts of the 4.0 Revolution on the chosen region and sector.
• A report, written according to the guidelines above, complementing the map presentation. The report should be delivered in digital format.
• A presentation of the digital map and the research conclusions.
