Ancient Greece, Pre-Hellenism: Review

Contextualization

Pre-Hellenistic Greece, also known as Classical Greece, is a historical period that roughly corresponds to the 8th to the 4th century BC, a time when Greek civilization flourished and expanded. Ancient Greece is known as the birthplace of democracy, philosophy, sciences, art, and architecture, which are fundamental instances of our contemporary society.

Greece and the World

During Pre-Hellenistic Greece, Athenian democracy emerged, along with the philosophical concepts of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, as well as the first scientific theories, with Hippocrates in medicine and Euclid in mathematics. The polis, as the city-states were called, were fundamental for political and social organization, with Athens and Sparta being the most powerful.

Historical Importance

Classical Greece is considered the cradle of Western civilization, making it a major object of study. Its political structure, philosophical ideas, scientific contributions, and artistic productions were the basis for many of the foundations and structures that prevail to this day in our societies. Understanding ancient Greece is, without a doubt, understanding a significant part of the formation of Western thought and societies.

Atividade Prática

Activity Title: "Pre-Hellenistic Greece and Its Contributions to Western Society"

Project Objective:

This project aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of pre-Hellenistic Greece and its influence on Western society, through the creation of "Time Capsules" that represent the main contributions of Ancient Greece.

Detailed Project Description:

Groups of 3 to 5 students will research pre-Hellenistic Greece and then create a "Time Capsule," which will be a physical or digital representation of the main contributions of this historical period. Each group can choose a central theme such as democracy, philosophy, science, art, or architecture, and include symbolic items in the capsule that represent these Greek legacies.

Additionally, students will have to prepare a report explaining the items included in the capsule and justifying the importance of these contributions to the formation of Western society.

Required Materials:

  • Materials for creating the Time Capsule (could be a decorated box, a digital presentation, or a website, for example)
  • Research materials (books, articles, reliable information websites)

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity:

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Assign the themes (democracy, philosophy, science, art, architecture) to the groups.
  3. Research the theme and pre-Hellenistic Greece using the suggested references and other additional sources.
  4. Discuss as a group and select the items that represent the major contributions of this period to include in the Time Capsule.
  5. Create the Time Capsule.
  6. Prepare a report explaining the items included in the capsule and justifying the importance of these contributions to Western society.
  7. Present the Time Capsule and the report to the class.

The estimated time for completing this project is two to four hours per student.

Final Product:

The final product of this project consists of two parts:

  1. The Time Capsule, which visually represents the contributions of pre-Hellenistic Greece to Western society.
  2. The report that explains the items in the Time Capsule. It should be divided into four sections:
    • Introduction: Should contextualize the chosen theme, its relevance, and the project's objective.
    • Development: Should explain the theory behind the chosen theme, the methodology used for selecting the items, and creating the Time Capsule.
    • Conclusions: Should summarize the main points, the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn from the project.
    • Bibliography used: Indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project.

The report and the Time Capsule together provide a complete and well-founded representation of the contributions of pre-Hellenistic Greece to current society.
