Ancient Rome, Roman Empire: Review

Contextualization

The Roman Empire, with its vast territory and influence, was one of the most significant powers of the ancient world. This remarkable empire not only spread its influence throughout Europe, but also had a profound impact on the regions of North Africa and the Middle East. To understand the magnitude of its legacy, it is necessary to explore various aspects of Roman life, such as politics, economy, culture, and society.

The political structure of the Roman Empire was crucial for the expansion and maintenance of its vast territory. Roman military strategy, governance methods, and empire administration are fascinating topics that reveal much about the power dynamics of that time. The Roman economy, based on agriculture, trade, and slavery, also had a huge influence on people's lives and the stability of the empire.

Regarding culture, Rome is known for its monumental architecture, arts, and literature, as well as for the adoption and adaptation of Greek culture. Religion, in turn, played a prominent role in Roman life, evolving from traditional Roman cults to the advent of Christianity.

In a world where many of our social, political, and cultural institutions have roots in Ancient Rome, it is essential to delve into this rich universe. Our legislation, the way our cities are planned, how we organize our societies, and even the language we speak carry the indelible mark of Rome.

It is difficult to underestimate the significance of the legacy of the Roman Empire. Its traces endure to this day, from the structure of our governments to the architecture of our cities. The study of the Roman Empire is not just a look into the past, but a window to understand the world we live in today.

Practical Activity: Rebuilding Rome

Project Objective:

Become Roman citizens and rebuild a model of a sector of the Roman Empire, adopting the roles of architects, politicians, merchants, soldiers, etc. The model must be accompanied by an oral presentation and a written report, where students will detail their research, the construction process, and the historical aspects represented in the model.

Project Description:

Each group will be responsible for choosing and representing a specific part of the Roman Empire, such as a market, a military camp, a village, a public square, a temple, among others. The model should represent the physical space, but should also incorporate elements of Roman life, such as daily life, economy, politics, religion, etc. During the oral presentation, students must be able to explain the importance of these elements and how they relate to Roman history and culture.

Necessary Materials:

  • Construction materials (cardboard, paper, glue, paint, etc)
  • Literature on the selected theme (books, websites, documentaries, articles, etc)
  • Equipment for photographic documentation of the process
  • Material for the production of the report (computer, paper, etc)

Step by Step:

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Each group must choose a sector of the Roman Empire to rebuild.

  3. Conduct a detailed research on the chosen theme (the architecture, the function of the place in Roman society, the routine of the individuals who frequented the place, etc).

  4. Plan the model, drawing a sketch of what you intend to build and listing the necessary materials.

  5. Build the model, documenting the process through photographs.

  6. Prepare an oral presentation, explaining the importance and role of the chosen sector in the Roman Empire.

  7. Write a detailed report on the research conducted, the construction process of the model, and the historical representation incorporated.

Deliverables:

  • Model of the chosen sector of the Roman Empire
  • Oral presentation
  • Written report

In the report, students must detail the research conducted, the construction process of the model, and explain in depth the various historical aspects incorporated in their model. The report should be written following a structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

  • Introduction: Provide context for the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.
  • Development: Explain the theory behind the central theme of the project, give details of the model construction process, indicate the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained.
  • Conclusions: Conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.
  • Bibliography: Indicate the sources on which you relied to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

In addition, students must prepare to present and defend their project, showing that they were able to connect the practical aspects of model construction with the theory and history of the Roman Empire.
