Complex Numbers: Powers of i

Context

Complex numbers are the foundation for understanding many concepts in exact sciences, especially in mathematics, physics, and engineering. These numbers consist of two components: the real part and the imaginary part. The element i, which we will study in this project, is called the imaginary unit and is defined by the relation i² = -1.

I believe many of you are wondering: "Why should we learn about this? Where do these concepts apply?" To answer, I must say that the field of application of complex numbers is very broad. They are useful for solving problems in electricity (RL, RC, RLC circuits), in physics (wave phenomena, quantum mechanics), in signal processing, in system control, and many others. Without a solid understanding of complex numbers, the equations and resolutions related to these contexts would not be possible.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Mastering the Powers of i."

Project Objective:

  • Understand essential concepts of complex numbers and the powers of i.
  • Develop skills to solve mathematical problems that incorporate these concepts.
  • Foster teamwork and improve communication skills through the development of an educational report made available to your peers.

Detailed Project Description:

Groups of 3 to 5 students will embark on a journey divided into two main parts. In the first part, they will explore the theoretical and practical aspects of the powers of i, solving various problems and exercises. To do this, they should explore in their research the cyclic properties associated with these powers. In the second part, the groups will produce an explanatory tutorial video and a brief report on the topic.

Required Materials:

  • Mathematics books on complex numbers.
  • Internet access for research and accessing online resources.
  • Software for recording and editing videos (can be a camera-equipped cell phone).
  • Text processing software for report production.

Step-by-Step Guide for Activity Execution:

  1. Initial Study: Research the powers of i, complex numbers, and their basic properties. In addition to textbooks, use online resources such as video lessons and tutorials.

  2. Practical Exercises: Solve mathematical exercises and problems involving the use of powers of i. This practice will solidify the theoretical concepts learned.

  3. Creation of Tutorial Video: Produce an explanatory video covering the concepts of complex numbers and the powers of i, as well as solve some exercises in the video to demonstrate the application of these concepts. This video should be clear and concise, so it can help other students understand the topic.

  4. Report Creation: Produce a brief report divided into Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. This document should detail all the work done, the discoveries made, the concepts learned, and the difficulties encountered. Additionally, I would like you to reflect on the process of teamwork and the importance of this skill.

  5. Final Presentation: Present to the class the produced video and a summary of the report. This will be the moment to share what was learned with all your peers.

The project should be developed over a month, with an average workload of 5 to 10 hours per participating student.

Project Deliverables:

Groups will be evaluated based on two main deliverables:

  1. Tutorial Video: This video should be clear and well-produced, reflecting the learned concepts and demonstrating the group's mastery of the subject. Do not worry about advanced recording equipment, the quality of the content is what matters.

  2. Written Report: This document should be well-structured and contain: Introduction (contextualization of the theme, relevance, and application), Development (core theories, explanation of activities, methodology used, and results discussion), Conclusion (project recap, learnings, and general reflections), and Bibliography (references of materials used during the project).

Both deliveries should complement each other by providing a complete and rich account of the experience lived during the project, in addition to the absorbed theoretical and practical content.
