Contextualization
Complex numbers were originally created to allow the solution of equations of the type x² = -1, which do not have real solutions. The need to solve these equations led mathematicians to expand the number system to accommodate 'imaginary roots'. Although initially considered a mere mathematical artifice, complex numbers came to have serious applications in many fields of science and engineering.
However, complex numbers can be written in various ways, and one of them is the trigonometric form. This form is particularly useful when we need to multiply or divide complex numbers, as it facilitates these operations. Resorting to the trigonometric form of a complex number is especially useful in the analysis of electrical circuits, where current and voltage have real and imaginary components.
Importance of Complex Numbers and their Trigonometric Form
Complex numbers have applications in various areas of Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering, such as in the analysis of electrical circuits, probability theory, signal analysis and processing, among others. This is because many natural phenomena can be described more accurately by complex numbers than by real numbers.
The trigonometric form of complex numbers, specifically, is often used when one wants to multiply or divide these numbers, or even to solve polynomial equations. Considering this, understanding these numbers is essential in the education of any professional who intends to work with exact sciences.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: Navigating through the Universe of Complex Numbers
Project Objective:
The objective of this project is to allow students to deepen their understanding of complex numbers, specifically in trigonometric form, and apply these concepts in a practical and multidisciplinary context, involving Mathematics and Physics.
Students will develop, simulate, and analyze electrical circuits using complex numbers in trigonometric form to calculate the currents and voltages in each component of the circuit. The results will be compared with computational simulations to verify the accuracy of the calculations.
Detailed Project Description:
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group must develop an electrical circuit that contains at least one resistor, one capacitor, and one inductor. This part of the project will require research, as students will need to understand how these components work and how they can be represented by complex numbers.
After the circuit project is defined, students must calculate the total current and voltage in each component of the circuit using complex numbers in trigonometric form. For this, students will need to use their calculation skills and their understanding of complex numbers.
Finally, students will use an electrical circuit simulator (recommended: LTSpice, free) to draw the circuit and compare the results of the simulations with manual calculations.
Required Materials:
- Computer with internet access
- Electrical circuit simulation software (e.g. LTSpice)
- Mathematics/Physics books/pages for reference
- Paper and pen for calculations
Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity:
- Organize into groups of 3 to 5 students.
- Research and study the concepts of complex numbers and their trigonometric representation.
- Develop an electrical circuit with at least one resistor, one capacitor, and one inductor. Document the process.
- Calculate the total current and voltage in each component of the circuit using complex numbers in trigonometric form. Document all calculations.
- Create the model of your circuit in the electrical circuit simulation software and run the simulations.
- Analyze and compare the results obtained through manual calculations and simulations.
- Prepare a final report, with all the indicated parts.
Project Deliverables:
The group of students will be responsible for delivering two main pieces:
- The electrical circuit project, including simulations and calculations;
- A final report, prepared together, containing:
- Introduction: Explain the concept of complex numbers, their trigonometric form, and the relevance in the analysis of electrical circuits.
- Development: Detail the built electrical circuit project, the methodology used, results of calculations and simulations, discussion and comparison of results.
- Conclusions: Revisit the project's learnings, including the application of complex numbers in trigonometric form, the creation and analysis of the electrical circuit, the skills developed, and the conclusions drawn about the project as a whole.
- Bibliography: Indicate the sources of information used during the work.
The entire process must be documented and included in the report. All students in the group must participate in both the practical and written parts of the project.
Each student must dedicate more than twelve hours to the development of this project, over several weeks.
