Linear Systems: Written by Matrices

Contextualization

Linear systems are an essential concept in the field of Mathematics and find vast applicability in various disciplines and real-world scenarios. They are used to solve problems involving multiple variables that can be expressed as a set of linear equations. A particularly elegant way to deal with these systems is to represent them in the form of matrices. With this representation, a series of operations can be performed more easily, quickly, and intuitively.

The representation of a linear system through a matrix is a way to organize the system's information in a manner that facilitates the identification of relationships between the variables. The matrix itself is just a rectangular table of numbers, but when used to represent a linear system, each row in the matrix corresponds to an equation in the system, and each column represents a variable.

Importance

Linear systems and, in particular, the matrix representation of these systems have a number of important applications in the real world. Among these, we can mention their use in solving engineering and physics problems, economics, computer science, among others. For example, in the field of engineering and physics, they are used to describe and solve systems of equations that represent physical phenomena, such as heat transmission or the dynamics of a system of particles.

Furthermore, the matrix representation of linear systems is an essential tool in the analysis and resolution of problems in the field of economics. It allows modeling and solving complex problems such as production optimization or resource distribution.

Practical Activity: "The System Matrix: A Playful and Interdisciplinary Approach"

Activity Title: The System Matrix

Project Objective

  • Understand and apply the matrix representation of linear systems;
  • Develop teamwork skills, effective communication, and time management;
  • Integrate knowledge from mathematics and other disciplines.

Detailed Project Description

This project is aimed at groups of 3 to 5 students and aims to explore concepts of linear systems written by matrices in a creative and interdisciplinary way, associating these concepts with music and art.

Each group must choose a song of their preference and, paying attention to the lyrics, should create a "Musical Matrix", that is, use the concept of matrices to build a representation of the elements (such as characters, objects, feelings, etc.) present in the chosen song. The idea is that, in the end, each group can represent the song's lyrics through a linear system represented by a matrix.

Required Materials

  • Large paper for creating the matrix;
  • Pencils, erasers, and colored pens;
  • White paper for the report;
  • Computer with internet access for research.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 members.
  2. Each group must choose a song they like. Pay attention to the lyrics and the elements present in it.
  3. Based on the chosen song, build a matrix that represents the elements you identified. Each row of the matrix should represent an equation and each column, a variable or identified element. Feel free to use colors and drawings to express your creativity.
  4. Solve the linear system represented by the matrix. Share the strategies used and the difficulties encountered.
  5. Create a detailed report, as instructed below, about the entire experience.

Project Deliverables and Connection with the Activities

At the end of the project, each group must deliver their "Musical Matrix" and the report, which must be written according to the following guidelines:

  1. Introduction: Here you should contextualize the choice of the song and the importance of using linear systems written by matrices to represent it.
  2. Development: In this section, you should explain the theory of linear systems written by matrices and how it was applied in creating the "Musical Matrix". You should detail all the steps you followed in executing the project and how you correlated the elements of the song with the equations created. Also, present which strategies were used to solve the system. You should also discuss the results obtained.
  3. Conclusion: You should summarize the main points of the project, the learnings obtained, and the conclusions reached about the use of linear systems written by matrices in the representation of the chosen song.
  4. Bibliography: You should indicate the sources you consulted and used to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

Throughout the project, you should document in photos and/or videos the main moments of discussion, development, and execution of the activity. These records can be attached at the end of the report as a "project log".

It is expected that, by the end of the project, you have developed technical skills to write a system of linear equations and unknowns in a matrix form, and acquired socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, proactivity, among others. Enjoy the process!
