Introduction

Trigonometric functions are fundamental elements of mathematics that allow the description of circular and wave motion, which has numerous real-world applications, from building construction to the study of radio wave behavior. The study of these functions involves a series of characteristics, including periodicity.

Periodicity is the property that a function has to repeat its values at regular intervals. In the case of trigonometric functions, such as sine and cosine, this property is intrinsically linked to the cyclical nature of the phenomena that these functions represent.

The periodicity of trigonometric functions is given by the formula 2π/T, where T is the period of the function, that is, the time interval after which the function starts to repeat itself. This property is one of the most important of trigonometric functions and forms the basis for many of their applications.

Contextualization

In the real world, the periodicity of trigonometric functions has a wide range of applications. For example, in physics, periodicity can be used to describe the motion of a pendulum or the oscillation of a spring. In the field of electronics, the periodicity of trigonometric functions is used to model radio waves and alternating currents.

In meteorology, the period of a trigonometric function can be used to analyze climatic and meteorological data, such as temperatures and atmospheric pressures, which have cyclical behaviors over time, similar to a sine or cosine function. Practical Activity

Activity Title: Trigonometric Periodicity Game

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to apply the theory of trigonometric functions periodicity learned in the classroom in a playful and collaborative way, through the development of an educational game.

Project Description

Each group will be responsible for creating a board game based on questions and answers, whose theme will be the periodicity of trigonometric functions. The game should allow participants to solve problems and questions related to the periodicity of trigonometric functions, stimulating reasoning and teamwork in a playful way.

The game should consist of multiple-choice questions, true or false statements, and problems that require mathematical solutions. It should cover topics such as the definition and application of sine and cosine functions, identifying the periodicity of a function from its graph or equation, and applying these concepts in everyday situations.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or paperboard for the board construction
  • Small cards for questions and answers
  • Pieces to represent players on the board
  • Dice
  • Materials for board decoration (colorful pens, stickers, etc.)

Step by Step

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should research and create questions based on the periodicity of trigonometric functions, using the indicated resources or others they deem relevant.
  3. With the questions in hand, the groups should create a game board, where each square corresponds to a question or challenge.
  4. The game rules are flexible and can be defined by the groups themselves, but it is important to encourage the participation of all members and the discussion of questions.
  5. After creating the game, each group should play it to ensure it is functioning correctly and make any necessary corrections.
  6. Finally, the groups will present the game to the class, explaining the rules and the correct way to play.

Submission

After completing the practical activity, each group must prepare a text report following the format below:

  1. Introduction: The group should contextualize the theme of the periodicity of trigonometric functions, mention its applicability in the real world, and highlight the project's objective.
  2. Development: Here, the group should detail the theory behind the central theme of the project, the stages of the game construction process, the methodology used, and the discussion of the results obtained.
  3. Conclusion: The report should end with a conclusions section, where the group should highlight the main learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project.
  4. Bibliography: Finally, the group should indicate the sources of information used, such as books, websites, videos, among others.

The reports must be submitted one week after the completion of the practical activity.
