Cultural Diversity

Contextualization

Cultural diversity is a topic deeply rooted in the discipline of philosophy, permeating various streams of thought and a key element in the formation of a plural and democratic society. The concept of cultural diversity enters values, beliefs, customs, traditions, languages, behaviors and all expressions that differentiate one human group from another. And within the scope of philosophy, it is necessary to understand cultural diversity not only as a social phenomenon, but mainly as an ethical and political issue.

In philosophy, concepts such as cultural relativism, universalism, multiculturalism and interculturalism are discussed. Cultural relativism, for example, defends the idea that each culture has its own values and moral norms and, therefore, there is no way to establish a universal value judgment. Universalism, on the other hand, supports the existence of universal values that can be applied to any culture. Multiculturalism and interculturalism, in turn, discuss the dynamics of contemporary societies that are marked by diverse cultures that coexist and interact.

The theme of cultural diversity is not merely theoretical, but has practical and palpable implications in our daily lives. We live in a globalized society that is characterized by the coexistence of diverse cultures. This implies the need for harmonious coexistence between different cultural groups, which requires us to be able to understand and respect differences. In addition, cultural diversity is a driver for innovation and creativity, fundamental elements in contemporary times.

Furthermore, the discussion about cultural diversity is crucial for sustainable development. UNESCO, in its Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, recognizes that cultural diversity is as necessary for humanity as biodiversity is for nature. Thus, promoting cultural diversity is a way to ensure equitable and sustainable development.

To delve into the themes and concepts presented, groups can consult:

  • "Cultural diversity in the contemporary world" by Danilo Marcondes (Available in libraries and for online purchase).

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Living Cultures: Exploring and Appreciating Cultural Diversity"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to deepen their knowledge about cultural diversity, based on the research and analysis of different world cultures and the production of a cultural event with the presentation and discussion of the results found. In addition, it seeks to promote the ability to work in teams, effective communication, time management and interdisciplinary knowledge.

Detailed Project Description

Students will form groups of 3 to 5 members and each group must choose a country to investigate its culture. Students should do detailed research on the culture of the chosen country, addressing aspects such as: traditions, religious practices, language, cuisine, art (music, dance, painting, theater, etc.), clothing and customs of the country. It is important that students investigate the influences of other cultures in that country and how that culture manifests itself today.

In addition, the groups must problematize individual and collective habits and practices of waste production, reuse and disposal in the studied country, from a socio-environmental perspective. The group must then select and elaborate action proposals that promote socio-environmental sustainability, the fight against systemic pollution and responsible consumption in the studied country.

At the end of the project, each group will have to organize a cultural event to present their findings. The cultural event should include an oral presentation on the culture, an exhibition of representative artifacts or images, a demonstration or tasting of typical foods and an artistic presentation (dance, music, theater, etc.) related to the studied culture.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research.
  • Books, documentaries and other sources of information about the culture of the chosen country.
  • Varied materials for the production of the cultural event (depends on the culture studied and the group's choice).

Detailed Step-by-Step for the Activity

  1. Formation of groups and choice of country to study.
  2. Detailed research on the culture of the chosen country, including the problematization of habits and practices of production, reuse and disposal of waste.
  3. Elaboration of action proposals that promote socio-environmental sustainability in the studied country.
  4. Organization of the cultural event: planning, obtaining materials, rehearsals, preparing presentations.
  5. Holding the cultural event.
  6. Writing the final report.

Project Deliverables

Students will have to deliver:

  1. A written report containing: an introduction to the theme and the chosen country, the theory debated and the research methods used, a discussion of the results of the research and the cultural event, the conclusions obtained and the bibliography used.
  2. A cultural event.

In the production of the report, it is important that students evidence in the Development the practices of production, reuse and disposal of waste in the studied country and the proposals for action for socio-environmental sustainability. In the Results students should explain the main findings about the culture and how they were able to translate them into a cultural event. In the Conclusion, students should reflect on what they learned from the project and its impact on the understanding of cultural diversity.
