Freedom and Subjectivity

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Simulating a Society: Freedom and Subjectivity in Debate"

Project Objective

To explain and discuss, based on a practical experience, the complexities involved in the discussion about freedom and subjectivity. The project should generate reflections on how our subjectivities can influence our freedoms and vice versa.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for creating and simulating a society, defining its rules, principles, rights, duties, and form of government. Within this society, students should discuss and analyze issues of freedom and subjectivity.

These issues may arise from dilemmas proposed by the teacher, or from the students' own interaction within the society they created. Groups should record the development of the activity, the discussions that took place, the decisions made, and the dilemmas faced.

Required Materials

No specific materials are required. The activity should be carried out in the classroom, using desks and the board to assist in the simulation and debates.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Creation of Society: Each group must create their own society, defining rules, principles, rights, duties, and form of government. This phase should last approximately one hour.

  2. Simulation of Society: Groups will start to "live" within the society they created, beginning to interact with each other and debate the issues of freedom and subjectivity that arise. The teacher may propose dilemmas to be discussed. This phase should last approximately two hours.

  3. Activity Record: Groups should make a detailed record of the activity's development, the discussions that took place, the decisions made, and the dilemmas faced. They should write a report following the structure: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

Project Deliverables

The final result of the activity will be a report written by each group, containing:

  • Introduction: Should contextualize the theme, its relevance and application in the real world, as well as the objective of this project.

  • Development: Should explain the theory behind the central theme(s) of the project, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally, present and discuss the results obtained.

  • Conclusion: Should conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn about the project.

  • Bibliography: Should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

Students should pay attention to detailing and reflecting on how the dynamics of the society they created related to the concepts of freedom and subjectivity. What did they learn from this experience? How did their decisions and dilemmas connect with the readings and theoretical discussions?
