Light is a form of energy that is part of our daily lives, whether illuminating our environments, enabling us to see colors, or even forming rainbows after the rain. Optical phenomena are fascinating and, despite being constantly present in our lives, their complexities often go unnoticed. In this project, we will conduct an investigation on one of these phenomena - light reflection.
Reflection is the phenomenon that occurs when a beam of light strikes a surface and returns to the medium of origin. There are two types of reflection: regular, which occurs when the surface is smooth and polished, and diffuse, which happens when the surface is rough. In this project, we will focus on regular reflection.
Importance of the Theme
Light reflection is a physically important phenomenon, common in our daily lives and applied in various technologies. Mirrors in homes and vehicles, microscopes, telescopes, and even lasers use this property of light to function. Furthermore, reflection is fundamental in the study of Physics, as it is through it that we understand crucial concepts such as refraction, diffraction, and interference.
Considering the relevance of the theme, it is necessary to deeply understand the concept of light reflection. This project will be an opportunity to explore the phenomenon practically, which will contribute to a better understanding of the subject.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: Investigating Light Reflection with Flat Mirrors
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to provide students with practical experience in investigating the regular reflection of light using a flat mirror. Students will build a simple laboratory in the classroom or at home to observe, experiment, and collect data on the phenomenon of light reflection.
Detailed Project Description
The student groups (3 to 5 students per group) will have to set up an experiment to investigate the principle of regular light reflection. The principle states that when a ray of light strikes a smooth surface, the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.
Students will be responsible for designing and conducting the experiment, collecting and interpreting the data, and then writing a comprehensive report on the findings, with an emphasis on explaining the phenomenon of light reflection.
Required Materials
- Flat mirror;
- Flashlight or other light source;
- Millimeter paper;
- Protractor;
- Pencil and eraser;
- Ruler.

Place the flat mirror on the millimeter paper.

Draw a straight line on the paper representing the incident light ray.

Measure and record the angle of incidence on the paper using a protractor.
