Contextualization

Welcome, young physicists! In this project, we will venture into the fantastic world of the Theory of Relativity. Contrary to what many may think, the Theory of Relativity, proposed by physicist Albert Einstein in 1905, is not just a complex and abstract theory, but has several practical applications and significant impacts on our daily lives.

Relativity is divided into two main parts: Special Relativity and General Relativity. The former focuses on inertial reference frames, that is, non-accelerated systems, and presents two fundamental postulates: the laws of physics are the same in all inertial systems and the speed of light is constant, independent of the observer or the light source.

On the other hand, General Relativity, proposed by Einstein in 1915, extends the theory to consider gravity and accelerated systems. Here, the revolutionary idea is that the presence of mass and energy curves the space-time around them.

These concepts have drastically changed our understanding of the universe, from time and space to gravity and light.

Importance and Applications

The Theory of Relativity is not just an abstract theory, its understanding is crucial for many technologies we use today. For example, GPS satellites take into account the effects of Relativity to provide accurate location. In the absence of relativistic corrections, location errors would accumulate at a rate of about 10 km per day!

Furthermore, General Relativity is the basis for the study of black holes, neutron stars, and the expansion of the universe. Therefore, a deep understanding of this theory is essential for research in physics and astrophysics.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Relativity in Action

Project Objective

This project aims to provide a deep understanding of the Special and General Theory of Relativity through a practical and playful approach. Students will have the opportunity to deepen their theoretical knowledge and practice their socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, proactivity, and creative thinking.

Detailed Project Description

Students, in groups of 3 to 5 people, will conduct a thorough study of the Theory of Relativity and create a short play to illustrate the main concepts and postulates. This play should be based on a fictional and interesting story that allows students to explore the concepts of the Theory of Relativity.

The project will be divided into three phases:

  1. Research and Study: Groups should conduct in-depth research on the Theory of Relativity, using the suggested resources and any other materials they consider relevant. Groups should study the historical context, the problems the theory solves, the main postulates, and practical applications.

  2. Script and Characters: After the research phase, groups should create a compelling story that allows the presentation of the studied concepts. The script should contain a detailed description of the characters and the plot, as well as an explanation of how the Theory of Relativity will be incorporated into the story.

  3. Rehearsal and Play Presentation: Finally, groups will practice the play and present it to the classroom. The duration should be approximately 15 to 20 minutes per presentation.

  2. Play materials: character costumes, sets, props, etc.

  1. Group Organization: Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  3. Play Planning: Discuss ideas for the story and decide on the plot, characters, and how the Theory of Relativity will be incorporated.
  4. Script Writing: Write the script, detailing the characters' lines, actions, and the plot.
  5. Play Preparation: Gather costumes and props, create the set, and rehearse the play.
  6. Play Presentation: Present the play to the classroom.
  7. Report Elaboration: Write a detailed report on the project.

Project Deliverables and Connection to Suggested Activities

After completing the project, each group must deliver a detailed report. This report should address the Theory of Relativity, the methodology used in the research and play creation, the play's story and its significance, and the conclusions drawn about the process and the theme. The report should follow the format of a scientific report, containing:

1. Introduction: Students should contextualize the Theory of Relativity and the play, explaining why they chose this form of presenting the content. 2. Development: Students should discuss the Theory of Relativity in detail, explain the methodology used in the research, play creation, and story choice, and finally present and discuss the play, explaining how the Theory of Relativity was incorporated into the story. 3. Conclusion: Students should conclude the work, summarizing their main points, stating the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn about the project. 4. Bibliography: Students should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The report should be delivered one week after the play presentation.
