Contextualization

The science of physics is all around us, at every moment, whether we are listening to music or talking on our cell phones. Behind the magic of the sounds that enchant us lies the physics of waves, specifically the study of pitch, volume, and timbre. Understanding these concepts will help us better comprehend the world around us.

In Physics, we need to understand that sound is a mechanical wave that requires a material medium to propagate. It is produced by vibrations that propagate through this medium, such as air, water, or even solids. Therefore, pitch, timbre, and volume are related to the characteristics of this wave, more specifically to the frequency, amplitude, and waveform.

The pitch of a sound, or tone, is determined by the frequency of the sound wave. High-frequency sounds are heard as high (treble), while low-frequency sounds are heard as low (bass). Volume is related to the amplitude of the sound wave. Sound waves with high amplitude are heard as loud sounds, and waves with low amplitude are heard as soft sounds. Timbre is the quality of sound that allows us to distinguish different instruments or voices, even when they produce the same note at the same volume.

Importance

Understanding these concepts is essential not only for physics students but also for those interested in music, sound engineering, architectural acoustics, and many other disciplines. Imagine a sound engineer who can manipulate pitch, timbre, and volume to create the perfect acoustics for a live concert. Or a musician who understands how adjustments to their instrument affect the timbre and pitch of the music produced.

In medicine, ultrasounds are used to obtain images of our internal body. Understanding pitch, volume, and timbre is also essential for the development of technologies, such as voice assistants, which rely on identifying the pitch and timbre of the voice to function correctly.

Practical Activity

Title: "The Sound Around Us: Exploring Pitch, Volume, and Timbre"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to deepen the understanding of the physical concepts of pitch, volume, and timbre, integrating the knowledge with the Music discipline through a practical and collaborative experience.

Detailed Project Description

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, must carry out a series of experiments involving sound and music to explore, in practice, the physical concepts of pitch, volume, and timbre.

First, students must develop a theoretical framework on the concepts of pitch, volume, and timbre, explaining their importance and applications in various everyday situations and in science.

Second, the groups must carry out three separate experiments, each focused on one of the three main concepts (pitch, volume, and timbre). These experiments must be created and developed by the students and should use musical instruments or everyday objects that produce sound as study tools.

Finally, students must relate the results obtained to the theory studied and analyze if the results are consistent with the theory.

Required Materials

To carry out this project, the following materials are needed:

  1. Musical instruments or everyday objects that produce various sounds
  2. Computer with internet access for research
  3. Paper and pen for notes
  4. Audio recording software to record the sounds produced (can be a mobile app)

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Each group must conduct a theoretical study on the concepts of pitch, volume, and timbre. This study must be documented and will serve as the basis for the development of the experiments.

  2. The groups must create three experiments, each focused on the concepts of pitch, volume, or timbre. The experiments must involve the production and analysis of sounds, using musical instruments or everyday objects.

  3. Students must carry out the experiments, documenting all steps, observations, and results. The experiments should be recorded using audiovisual resources when possible.

  4. With the collected data, the groups must prepare an analysis of the results, relating them to the theory studied.

Project Deliverables

At the end of this project, the groups must submit a written report and, if possible, a video, presenting the following topics:

  1. Introduction: A contextualization of the theme, explaining its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

  2. Development (Theory and Practice): A discussion of the theory studied and a detailed description of the experiments carried out: the objectives, procedures, observations, and results.

  3. Conclusions: A discussion of the results obtained in relation to the theory studied, the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn about the project.

  4. References: The sources used for research and project development.

The report preparation should be a collaborative work, in which all group members contribute to the writing. The video, if possible, should illustrate the experiments and can be an additional aid to understanding the work done by the groups.

This project should last approximately 12 hours to be divided between theoretical studies, the creation and execution of experiments, and report writing.
