Radiations are a natural and inevitable phenomenon, present in various contexts on our planet, from sunlight to the electronic equipment we use daily. Understanding what they are, how they behave, and, above all, their effects on health and the environment is essential for the development of an increasingly safety and sustainability-conscious awareness.
Radiations can be classified according to their nature and energy. In the context of our study, we are particularly interested in ionizing radiations, capable of removing electrons from atoms and molecules, and non-ionizing radiations, which do not have this capacity. These, associated with fundamental Physics concepts such as energy, power, and intensity, form our key theoretical basis.
The idea of radiations may initially seem a bit abstract, however, these are concepts that permeate our daily lives and allow us to explain a series of phenomena around us. Radiations are responsible for our tanning in the summer, going through X-ray images to the possibility of radioactive contamination. Understanding what radiations are and what they can cause is an essential skill for the citizen of the 21st century.
Theoretical Introduction
Firstly, it is important to understand that radiation is a form of energy in transit. It can be transmitted through electromagnetic waves (such as visible light, radio waves, or X-rays) or subatomic particles (beta particles, alpha particles, or neutrinos).
In this sense, ionizing radiation is the one capable of removing electrons from atoms and molecules, turning them into ions. This is the case of X-rays, for example. This type of radiation can cause serious harm to living organisms, including genetic mutations. Non-ionizing radiation, such as microwaves, has insufficient energy to ionize atoms or molecules.
Furthermore, it is essential to know that the electromagnetic spectrum is the term given to the classification of electromagnetic radiations according to their frequency and, consequently, energy. This concept allows us to distinguish between radiations of different types and understand their different effects.

Students, organized in groups of 3 to 5, should develop a presentation and an educational booklet on the risks of ionizing and non-ionizing radiations for humans and the environment. The work should involve in-depth research on the topic, including understanding of physics, chemistry, and biology concepts related to the theme, as well as preparation and presentation of didactic material.
Necessary Materials:
Computer with internet access, software for creating presentations (PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides, among others) and software for creating booklets (Word, Google Docs, Canva, among others).
