Theoretical Introduction

Sociology is a discipline that is dedicated to the analysis of our societies and their complexities. Among its vast fields of study are included concepts such as Society, Ideology and Culture, which are inter-related and unfold in countless themes and debates.

A Society, in a broad understanding, is defined by the grouping of individuals who share the same geographic space, organize themselves around political structures and maintain social relationships, sharing common cultural aspects. Here we have the concept of Culture, which can be understood as the set of human manifestations (artistic, linguistic, religious, etc.) that are learned and shared within a social group.

As for Ideology, according to Marxist thought, it is understood as a set of ideas, beliefs and values that have the function of hiding the power relationships present in a society, naturalizing them. It is important to note that this is just one of the possible perspectives on what Ideology is, fulfilling us to also explore other perspectives.

Contextualization

In the contemporary world, these concepts are increasingly relevant. We live in increasingly globalized societies, where cultures are in constant contact and dialogue (or conflict). Simultaneously, we are going through a moment where the circulation of ideologies is intense, largely due to the ease brought by information and communication technologies.

By understanding these concepts and their interrelationships, it is possible to reflect more critically on our reality, developing more informed and conscious positions. This project, therefore, proposes an in-depth look at Society, Ideology and Culture through the development of practical activities and debates that will allow us to delve into these topics.

I suggest the following sources to deepen the theme:

1. Book: "Society and Culture: an introduction", by Clifford Geertz. This book is an excellent introduction to understanding Culture within the anthropological perspective.
2. Article: "The notion of Ideology from Marx to Althusser", by Flávia Tojal, available in the Journal of Human Sciences (link). This article presents a historical panorama of how the concept of Ideology was understood and used by different thinkers.
3. Video class: "Society", available on the Youtube channel "Leitura ObrigaHISTORIA" (link). This video class presents the concept of Society in a clear and didactic way.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: In Search of Identity: A Socio-Cultural Documentary

Activity Objective:

The main objective of this project is to enable the practical and critical exploration of the concepts of Society, Culture and Ideology. For this, it is expected that students are able to investigate these concepts in a real context, analyzing the diverse cultural manifestations present in society and the ideologies that permeate them.

Detailed Project Description:

The groups must produce a short film documentary (15-20 minutes) entitled "In Search of Identity", which investigates local culture and how ideology influences social and cultural life.

They should research and include the following points in the documentary:

1. Distinct characteristics of the local society (history, demographics, economy, politics, etc.)
2. Cultural manifestations (art, gastronomy, music, traditions, etc.)
3. Ideologies present and how they reflect on culture and society
4. Impact of globalization on their local culture
5. Interviews with members of local society: from different generations, occupations, and social classes.

Required Materials:

1. Video camera or smartphone with good video recording feature.
2. Computer with video editing software.
3. Internet access for research and references.
4. Notebook for field notes and documentary planning.

Detailed Step-by-Step:

To assist in the organization of the work, I suggest that the project be divided into stages, each contemplating a certain number of hours to be spent by the students:

1. Preliminary Research (4 hours):

• Define a research plan that includes the main aspects of the local culture and society to be investigated.
• Seek primary and secondary sources on local history and culture.

2. Documentary Planning (4 hours):

• Decide which aspects of the research will be focused on in the documentary.
• Organize a timeline for the documentary, including the points you want to cover and the order in which they will appear.

3. Filming (10 hours):

• Conduct interviews with members of the local community.
• Capture images of important places, events or cultural objects.
• Document the cultural and social manifestations observed.

4. Documentary Editing (10 hours):

• Use the video editing software to assemble the documentary, including the footage, narration and soundtrack.

5. Redaction of the Written Document (8 hours):

• Prepare a detailed report containing Introduction, Development, Conclusions and Bibliography.

Project Deliverables:

As a result of this project, students must deliver:

1. A short film documentary (15 to 20 minutes long) that explores the concepts of Society, Culture and Ideology in the chosen locality.
2. A written report explaining the theory behind the concepts of Society, Culture and Ideology, detailing the process of making the documentary (including methodology, difficulties encountered, solutions adopted), discussing the results obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project.
   • Introduction: Describe the relevance of the project, with the school context and the local community as a backdrop, and explain the objective of the project.
   • Development: Summarize the concepts worked on, explain in detail the process of creating the documentary, justifying the choices made and discuss the results obtained.
   • Conclusion: Finalize the work by summarizing your main points, listing the lessons learned and reflections resulting from the project.
   • Bibliography: List all theoretical references and research sources used for the development of the project.

Remember that this is a project that requires both technical and socio-emotional skills. Organization, group cooperation, respect for differences, empathy, creativity and critical thinking are skills that will be developed and evaluated.
