Coordinating Conjunctions and Compound Sentences by Coordination

Contextualization

Theoretical Introduction

The Portuguese language is built and organized through various grammatical structures, and among them are the coordinating conjunctions. These are words that link two clauses or two similar terms in the same clause. Coordinating conjunctions are classified as: additive, adversative, alternative, conclusive, and explicative.

When working with compound sentences, we are dealing with a phrasal structure that has two or more clauses that are syntactically independent or semi-independent. When these clauses are linked by coordinating conjunctions, we call it a compound sentence by coordination.

Learning about coordinating conjunctions and compound sentences by coordination is essential for the development of linguistic competence, especially in writing. By mastering these contents, the student will be able to elaborate richer and more complex texts, as well as interpret the texts they read more efficiently.

Contextualization

In a society increasingly structured by communication, the ability to express oneself clearly, cohesively, and coherently is indispensable. In the real world, we are constantly challenged to communicate appropriately, whether in a job interview, when writing a professional email, or even when expressing ourselves on social media.

Furthermore, in the context of multiple disciplines, understanding how ideas are connected can help, for example, in solving complex problems in mathematics, understanding the logical sequence of an experiment in the sciences, or even interpreting a text from history or literature.

Practical Activity

Project Title: Coordinative Connections - The Art of Effective Communication

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to develop the understanding and application of coordinating conjunctions and compound sentences by coordination, through the construction of a short film script and its subsequent dramatization.

Detailed Project Description

Students should elaborate a short film script, using various coordinating conjunctions and examples of compound sentences by coordination. The script should be structured in five scenes, each demonstrating a different category of coordinating conjunction (additive, adversative, alternative, conclusive, and explicative).

After the script is elaborated, students should stage the short film, recording it on video. The film production will allow students to experience in practice the application of conjunctions and coordination between clauses.

As part of the task, the group should produce a detailed report of the process and a reflection on the concepts learned.

Necessary Materials

  • Textbooks and/or digital resources on Portuguese and Arts.
  • Internet access for research and references.
  • Camera for recording (can be a smartphone).
  • Clothing and objects for staging the scenes (can be collected from home or recycled).

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Group Formation and Planning (4 hours): Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students. Start by planning the work methodology, defining roles, and responsibilities.

  2. Theoretical Study (4 hours): Study the theory of coordinating conjunctions and compound sentences by coordination. Use the indicated references and look for other study sources.

  3. Brainstorm and Script (6 hours): Brainstorm to choose the theme of the short film. Develop the script, ensuring that all coordinating conjunctions are present and that there are examples of compound sentences by coordination.

  4. Staging and Recording (8 hours): Prepare the set, costumes, and other details for the recording. Rehearse and record the short film.

  5. Video Editing (6 hours): Create a final version of the video by editing the recordings and adding textual information that emphasizes the studied concepts.

  6. Report (4 hours): Finally, write a report following the specified format, reflecting on the process, the concepts learned, and how they relate to real life.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver:

  • The short film script, highlighting the coordinating conjunctions and compound sentences by coordination.
  • The short film video.
  • The report with the introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography. In the development section, detail the process of creating the script and producing the film, discussing how they applied the studied concepts in practice. In the conclusion, reflect on what was learned, how the project helped to better understand the concepts, and how they can be applied in daily life.
