Context

Portuguese, like any other language, has its own particularities and complexities that allow for the richness and diversity of communication among people. Within this diversity, we find the so-called subordinating conjunctions, fundamental pieces in the construction of sentences that allow for the expression of more complex and elaborate thoughts.

Subordinating conjunctions establish a relationship between two clauses where one of them (the subordinate clause) depends on the other (main clause) to make complete sense. This is where Adjective and Adverbial Subordinate Clauses come into play. The former function as adjectives, that is, they qualify a noun present in the main clause. The latter, in turn, behave like adverbs, modifying a verb, an adjective, or even another adverb in the main clause.

When encountering a book, a newspaper article, or a conversation among friends, it is very likely that we come across sentences composed of subordination. Understanding how these sentences are formed is essential for the interpretation of texts and for written and oral production.

Activity Title

"The World of Subordinating Conjunctions: A Journey through Adjective and Adverbial Subordination"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to acquire practical and in-depth knowledge of subordinating conjunctions, focusing on adjective and adverbial subordinate clauses, through the creation of a script and staging of a dialogue.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for creating a script for a short scene, which can be from a movie, a series, a commercial, or even an episode of a story created by the group. The twist? The dialogue must be entirely constructed based on adjective and adverbial subordinate clauses.

Students will be encouraged to be creative, funny, dramatic, or whatever style they prefer, as long as the dialogue is cohesive and coherent, and correctly uses adjective and adverbial subordinate clauses.

After creating the script, students must rehearse and record the scene, which should last between 5 and 10 minutes. The recording can be done with a cell phone in any location, as long as the audio and video quality allow for evaluation.

Required Materials

1. Paper and pen or computer for script creation.
2. A cell phone or camera for scene recording.
3. Any items the students want to use to make the scene more realistic (character clothing, scene objects, etc.).

Step by Step

1. Students must divide into groups of 3 to 5 people.
2. Each group must create a plot for the scene they will perform.
3. Next, the group must create the script of the scene, being careful to include various adjective and adverbial subordinate clauses.
4. After completing the script, students must rehearse the scene.
5. Record the scene.
6. Create a report following the guidelines below, contextualizing the project and explaining the development stages.
7. Submit the script, video, and report for evaluation.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, students must submit:

1. The written script, which should include the indication of the adjective and adverbial subordinate clauses used.
2. The recording of the scene.
3. A report containing the following topics:
   • Introduction: Contextualize the project, indicate its relevance and the application of subordinating conjunctions in the real world.
   • Development: Explain the theory of subordinating conjunctions and adjective and adverbial subordinate clauses, detail the stages of script creation, the challenges encountered, how they were resolved, and the methodology used for recording. Also include the analysis of the recorded scene, indicating which clauses were used and why.
   • Conclusions: Summarize the main points of the work, reflect on the learnings and the experience of working in a group, provide suggestions for future work.
   • Bibliography: List the sources used as the basis of the project, including videos, books, and websites.
