Scientific Technical Vocabulary

Contextualization

Introduction

Welcome to this project of technical and scientific Spanish! The goal is to provide you with an immersion in the universe of science and technology through the Spanish language. Spanish is a language with a vast global reach, being the second most spoken language in the world in terms of number of native speakers. Therefore, Spanish has gained space in the scientific and technological environment.

Scientific language itself is universal, but each language has its peculiarities in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure. Therefore, it will be of great value for you to acquire specialized knowledge of technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish.

The Importance of Technical-Scientific Vocabulary in Spanish

In the globalized world we live in, scientific and technical knowledge is constantly evolving, and the globalization of such knowledge is as important as its discovery and development. Thus, mastering technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish is a valuable skill, as it allows you to participate in global scientific discussions, read articles and books in Spanish, attend conferences and seminars, and even work in an environment where Spanish is the main language.

Mastering technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish can open doors to the academic and work world, especially in Spanish-speaking countries that are centers of innovation and scientific research.

Practical Activity: "The Science in Spanish"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to apply and expand knowledge about technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish through the creation of a "minidocumentary" on a scientific topic of interest. This audiovisual document should be presented entirely in Spanish and should help deepen students' knowledge of technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish.

Detailed Project Description

Students should divide into groups of 3 to 5 people and choose a scientific topic of their interest (for example, quantum physics, molecular biology, neurology, software engineering, applied mathematics, etc).

Each group will investigate the chosen topic, studying the technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish related to it. Then, the students should prepare a minidocumentary (10 to 15 minutes long) that explains the chosen topic and its vocabulary in Spanish.

Through this project, students will not only learn about a specific scientific topic but also practice important skills such as research, teamwork, time management, and audiovisual production.

Necessary Materials

  • Internet access for research
  • Camera (a smartphone is sufficient)
  • Video editing software (can be a free software)
  • Spanish dictionary and/or online resources to consult technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish

Activity Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Students should organize into groups of 3 to 5 people.

  2. Topic Selection: Each group chooses a scientific topic of interest, which will be the focus of their minidocumentary.

  3. Research: The groups conduct in-depth research on the chosen topic, with an emphasis on technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish. This research should be done through reliable sources and academic resources.

  4. Script: The group should develop a detailed script for the minidocumentary, which includes the video's narrative, the keywords, and concepts that will be explained.

  5. Recording: The group records the minidocumentary, following the script.

  6. Editing: The group edits the minidocumentary, adding graphics or images if necessary, and ensuring the quality of the audio and video.

  7. Preparation of the Report: Each group writes a report detailing the process of creating the minidocumentary, including the topic selection, research, and video production. The report should clearly show the theory behind the chosen topic, the methodology used in creating the video, and the technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish explored.

Project Delivery

In addition to the minidocumentary, each group must deliver a written report in Spanish, including the following topics:

  1. Introduction: A brief description of the chosen topic, its relevance in the scientific field, and the project's objective.

  2. Development: A detailed description of the research and production process of the minidocumentary, including the keywords and technical-scientific concepts in Spanish that were studied.

  3. Conclusions: A review of the main points learned during the project, including the challenges encountered and how they were overcome, as well as the insights gained through the process.

  4. Bibliography: All sources used for the work should be listed here, including books, websites, videos, among others.

The project will be concluded with the presentation of the minidocumentary and the report to be evaluated considering the appropriate use of technical-scientific vocabulary in Spanish, the quality of research and production of the minidocumentary, the structure and organization of the report, as well as the cooperation and teamwork demonstrated by the group.
