Dance Movement

Contextualization

Dance is one of the oldest forms of human expression and a unique way to explore the interaction between body, mind, and emotions. Since prehistoric times, dance has been an important means of communication and ceremony in many cultures around the world.

In this project, we will delve into the universe of 'Dance Movement'. It is a concept that goes beyond the simple act of dancing, as it involves using the body as an instrument of communication and artistic expression, and understanding dance as a cultural and social practice that is influenced and shaped by historical, political, and social contexts.

Introduction

'Dance Movement' is an essential concept in dance that refers to how we use our bodies to express ideas, emotions, and narratives. Depending on the dance style, movements can be fast or slow, smooth or strong, fluid or rigid, large or small. By exploring dance movement, we are exploring the language of the body.

In this activity, we will also explore the relationship between dance and other disciplines, such as music and history. Dance and music are closely linked, with music often providing the rhythm and melody that guide the dancers' movements. Furthermore, dance can be seen as an expression of a people's culture and history. By learning about different dance styles, we can also learn about the traditions and stories of the cultures that produced them.

To delve deeper into the subject and contextualize it within a larger framework, we recommend the following sources:

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Discovering Dance Movement - An Interdisciplinary Journey

Project Objective

  1. Understand and appreciate the concept of 'Dance Movement'.
  2. Explore the relationship between dance, music, and culture.
  3. Develop teamwork, research, planning, and presentation skills.

Detailed Project Description

Each group must choose a dance genre (ballet, salsa, tango, belly dance, hip hop, etc.). You will research the origin of the chosen dance, its cultural and historical context, characteristic movements, associated music, and also how this dance genre influences and is influenced by society.

Additionally, the group must learn, rehearse, and present a dance that characterizes the chosen genre. During the dance, the main movements that define the dance style chosen should be highlighted. The presentation should be at least 5 minutes long.

Required Materials

  1. Internet access for research.
  2. Books and/or documentaries about the chosen dance.
  3. Adequate space to rehearse and present the dance.
  4. Appropriate clothing and props for the presentation.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Completion

  1. Choice of dance genre: Each group must choose a dance genre to be researched and presented.

  2. Research and study: Each group must research the origin, cultural and historical context, characteristic movements, and associated music of the chosen dance genre.

  3. Rehearsals: After learning about the dance, group members must rehearse and perfect a dance presentation that illustrates the chosen genre.

  4. Presentation: Each group will present the rehearsed dance to the class. The presentation should include a brief introduction to the chosen dance genre and an explanation of the movements and steps to be presented.

  5. Report: Finally, each group must write a report detailing their research and experience. The report should include an introduction, development, conclusions, and the bibliography used.

Project Submission

The project must be submitted in two parts:

Practical Part: Dance presentation - Students must present the dance they rehearsed. The presentation must be recorded on video and submitted along with the report.

Theoretical Part: Report - The report must follow the structure of a research report, including the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Students must introduce the chosen dance genre and discuss its relevance in the world of dance. They must also present the project's objective.

  2. Development: Students must discuss what they learned during the research. They should talk about the origin of the dance, its cultural and historical context, characteristic movements, and associated music. They should also describe their experience during the rehearsals and the dance presentation.

  3. Conclusions: Students must discuss what they learned from the project, including the technical, cultural, and historical aspects of dance, as well as the skills they developed throughout the project.

  4. Bibliography: Students must list all sources used during the research.
