Context
Dance is a form of artistic expression that manifests through body movement. It is composed of various elements, such as costumes, scenery, lighting, and soundtrack, for example. Not only that, dance is also a reflection of the diverse regional cultures around the world, each with its own particularities and traditions. Therefore, learning about dance is also learning about the history and culture of different people.
Our approach to the theme 'Elements and locations of dance' will enable intense interaction among students. We will learn the importance of teamwork to create a show, time management to meet rehearsal deadlines, and the importance of creativity in producing a dance performance. The proposed activities will have a profound impact on students' views on dance and provoke a great reflection on culture and art.
The relevance of the chosen theme lies in the opportunity to allow students to develop various skills, from critical analysis to creativity. Teaching dance and its elements provides paths for exploring art, history, geography, and social aspects, challenging our students to expand their horizons and develop a new perspective on the world around them.
Practical Activity – 'Dancing with the Elements'
Project Objective
The objective of this activity is to explore different elements of dance (such as costumes, lighting, scenery, soundtrack) and regionalism in the art of dance. The project involves research, planning, design, rehearsal, and presentation of a mini dance piece that reflects the culture of a region chosen by the students.
Project Description
Students will be grouped into teams of 3 to 5 members. Each group must choose a region of the world (for example, Latin America, Africa, Asia, Europe, etc.) and dedicate themselves to researching that region, focusing on a specific traditional dance. The research should include both the analysis of aesthetic elements (costumes, scenery, etc.) and the cultural context of the chosen dance.
After the research, students should plan and design a mini dance presentation, adapting the chosen traditional dance to the classroom context, with approximately 5-10 minutes in duration. Teams are encouraged to be creative in the adaptation, incorporating fundamentals of contemporary dance if they wish.
Required Materials
- Internet access for research.
- Materials for building sets and costumes (can be reused from other projects and/or purchased).
- Space for rehearsals and presentation.
- Equipment for music playback.
Activity Steps
- Formation of groups and choice of the region to be researched.
- Research on the culture of the chosen region, focusing on the traditional dance: history, cultural context, aesthetic elements (costumes, scenery, music, etc.).
- Planning of the mini dance piece: script, music selection, set and costume design, choreography definition.
- Dance rehearsal.
- Final presentation: each group will perform a presentation for the class, demonstrating what they have learned about the culture and dance of the chosen region.
- Report writing: each group must write a document discussing the project, from the region selection stage, through research, planning, rehearsal, and presentation, also reflecting on teamwork and the difficulties and achievements of the process.
Project Deliverables
Students will have two main deliverables for this project: the dance presentation and the written report.
The dance presentation should demonstrate the result of the group's research and planning, showing the students' ability to apply what they have learned about the culture and dance of the chosen region. After the presentation, each group will receive feedback from their peers and the teacher.
The written report, in the format of an academic paper containing Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography, should detail each stage of the project. In the Introduction, students should contextualize the chosen dance and the reason for the choice. In the Development, they should explain the research, dance planning, and rehearsal process. In the Conclusions, students should reflect on what they learned from the project, both in terms of knowledge about dance and culture, and in terms of socio-emotional skills, such as teamwork and time management. The Bibliography should contain all sources consulted during the project execution.
