Use and Variation of the English Language

Contextualization and Introduction

  • Introduction

English is a polycentric language, which means that it is not exclusive to one region or group of people. It is spoken in a wide variety of forms around the world, adapting to different cultures, regions, and communities. This means that the English language is rich in linguistic variation, in terms of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

In this project, we will explore the concept of language variation and how it is particularly evident in the English language. Understanding this variation is key to understanding how different people use English in different contexts, but also to developing a sense of respect and appreciation for cultural and linguistic diversity.

Being able to recognize and understand these variations is a key skill for anyone who wants to be fluent in English. After all, the English that is actually spoken (and written) is not always the English that we learn in textbooks.

  • Contextualization

English is one of the world's most widely spoken and studied languages. In many spaces, it is considered to be the "global" or "universal" language, used for communication between people of different nationalities. But what is not always made clear in classrooms is that English is not a singular, uniform entity.

English is spoken in distinctive ways in different parts of the world. The version of English spoken in Australia, for example, has different characteristics than the English spoken in the United States or South Africa. Furthermore, even within a single country, there can be noticeable differences in the way that English is spoken.

All of this linguistic diversity is a cultural richness that we should value. Furthermore, it helps us understand that language is constantly evolving, shaped by factors as diverse as geography, history, and culture, among others.

Hands-on Activity: "Exploring the World through English: A Journey through Language Variation"

  • Title of Activity

Exploring the World through English: A Journey through Language Variation

  • Objective of the Project

Analyze and present the language variation present in English, developing the ability to recognize these differences and appreciate linguistic diversity.

  • Detailed Description of the Project

Students will be divided into groups of 3-5, and each group will be responsible for investigating the use and variation of the English language in a specific country or region (such as Australia, India, South Africa, etc.). Each group should analyze vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, as well as cultural aspects that influence the way English is spoken in that country or region.

  • Materials Required

  • Computers with internet access for research.

  • Presentation software (e.g., PowerPoint, Google Slides).

  • Camera or smartphone for video recording (optional).

  • Step-by-Step Instructions for Completing the Activity

  1. Selection of country or region: Each group will choose a country or region where English is spoken to be the focus of their investigation.

  2. Research: Using the recommended resources and others they may find, groups will conduct research to gather information on how English is spoken in their chosen location. They should pay attention not only to linguistic differences but also to how these variations are influenced by cultural and historical factors.

  3. Presentation preparation: With the information collected, each group will prepare a presentation on the variation of the English language in their chosen country or region. The presentation should include examples of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, as well as a discussion of the cultural and historical factors that influence these variations.

  4. Presentation recording (optional): If possible, groups may choose to record their presentation on video. This will give them the opportunity to showcase their English language communication skills, speaking as though they are from the country or region they researched.

  5. Report writing: After the hands-on activity has been completed, each student should write a report, individually, detailing the entire project process. The report should be divided into four sections: introduction, development, conclusion, and bibliography.

  • Individual Report
    • Introduction: The student should introduce the chosen country or region, the relevance of the study, and the purpose of the project.

    • Development: The student should explain the theory of language variation, the research process that was carried out, the methodology that was used, and the results that were found.

    • Conclusions: The student should summarize the main points of the project, state what was learned, and give a final reflection on the importance of understanding and respecting language variation.

    • Bibliography: The student should list the sources that they used for their research.

Project Deliverables

  1. Group Presentation: Each group will present their research findings to the class, either through a live presentation or by sharing a recorded video presentation.

  2. Individual Report: Following the presentation, each student should turn in a written report, individually, detailing the entire project process. The report should follow the Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography structure.

Through this project, students can develop numerous technical and socioemotional skills such as:

  • Technical: Recognizing language variation, exploring ways of speaking in the English language, analyzing the reach of the English language and its contexts of use in the globalized world, and using language variation in the English language.
  • Socioemotional: Time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and initiative.
