Theoretical Introduction

Mathematical sequences are a list of numbers presented in a specific order. They are composed of terms, where each term occupies a specific position in the sequence. There are various types of sequences, but in this project, we will focus on two main types: recursive and non-recursive sequences.

In the world of mathematics, a sequence is considered recursive when each new term is built from the previous term(s). On the other hand, a non-recursive sequence is one where the terms do not depend on the previous terms; they follow a fixed formula or pattern.

To illustrate, consider the sequence of natural numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... It is a non-recursive sequence because each term is exactly one more than the previous term. In other words, we do not need to know all the previous terms to calculate the next one. On the other hand, the Fibonacci sequence: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5... is an example of a recursive sequence, as each term is the sum of the two previous terms.

Contextualization

Mastering the concept of sequences, their types, and applications is fundamental, as sequences are present in various contexts of our daily lives, from nature to music.

For example, the petals of many flowers or the branches of some plants follow patterns that can be described by a mathematical sequence. In music, sequences are used to create rhythms and melodies. Furthermore, recursive sequences are widely used in computing and programming to solve problems efficiently.

Now that we have been introduced to the concepts of recursive and non-recursive sequences, let's delve deeper into this topic, explore some examples, and see how these sequences are applied in the real world.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Exploring the World of Sequences"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is for students to apply the concepts of recursive and non-recursive sequences and understand the importance and applications of these sequences in the real world. Additionally, the activity aims to promote teamwork, improve student communication, and develop logical and creative thinking.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants, and each group will have one week to complete the task.

The project will be divided into 3 parts: research, practical application, and preparation of a report.

  1. Research: Students will be tasked with researching examples of recursive and non-recursive sequences in the real world (nature, art, music, computing, etc.) and explaining how each sequence is formed and applied.

  2. Practical Application: After the research, students must create an original recursive sequence and a non-recursive sequence, explaining the logic behind the formation of each. They must then demonstrate the application of these sequences in a real or theoretical context.

  3. Preparation of a Report: Finally, students must prepare a detailed report explaining the research, creation, and application processes of the sequences, as well as discussing the results obtained, the difficulties faced, and the solutions found. They must also indicate the bibliography used.

Required Materials

  1. Internet access for research.
  2. Notebook for notes.
  3. Pen or pencil.

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for Carrying Out the Activity

  1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 5 participants.
  2. Each group should research examples of recursive and non-recursive sequences found in the real world.
  3. The next step is to create a recursive sequence and a non-recursive sequence. The sequences must be original, and students must explain the logic behind the formation of each.
  4. Next, the groups should demonstrate the application of the created sequences, either in a real or theoretical context.
  5. Students should then write a report describing the entire process, the results obtained, the difficulties encountered, and a discussion on the importance and application of sequences in the real world.
  6. Finally, the groups must present the project to the class, discuss the learnings, and answer any questions.

Project Deliverables

The project will have the following deliverables:

  1. Presentation of the researched recursive and non-recursive sequences, with an explanation of their formation and application.

  2. Presentation of the recursive and non-recursive sequences created by the students. The group must explain the logic behind the formation of these sequences and demonstrate their application in a real or theoretical context.

Students should use the concepts learned during the practical activity to prepare the report, making the document a reflection of the work done. The technical and socio-emotional skills learned during the project will be essential in writing this document. Collaboration among group members will be crucial for the report to be comprehensive and cover all necessary topics.

  1. Introduction: contextualization of the topic, its relevance and application in the real world, and the objective of this project.
  2. Development: explanation of the theory behind the topic, detailed description of the activity, methodology used, and presentation of the results.
  3. Conclusion: summary of the main points, learnings obtained, and conclusions about the project.
