Metric vs. Imperial System

Contextualization

Mathematics is the universal language that helps us understand the world around us. And a fundamental part of this language is the ability to measure and quantify the world around us. For this, there are different systems of measurement. Today, we will explore two of the most common ones: the Metric System, used by most countries in the world, and the Imperial System, mainly used in the United States and the United Kingdom.

The Metric System is a way of organizing measurements using a logical and decimal sequence, while the Imperial System uses a variety of non-standard units. For example, a mile is divided into 5,280 feet, while a kilometer is divided into 1,000 meters, which are in turn divided into 100 centimeters and so on.

The conversion between these two systems is a fundamental skill to understand our globalized world. If you have ever traveled abroad, you have probably come across this situation. In such an interconnected world, it is essential to be fluent in both systems, including to avoid misunderstandings and accidents in daily life and work.

Importance

In today's interconnected world, understanding the different systems of measurement and being able to convert between them can have a significant impact on both our personal and professional routines.

From a practical point of view, measuring conversions are necessary for a variety of daily activities, from cooking (knowing that an American recipe may call for ingredients in ounces and pounds instead of grams and kilograms) to understanding the weather forecast (temperatures in the United States are expressed in Fahrenheit, not Celsius). Additionally, in many careers, especially in science, engineering, and business, the ability to convert units between different systems is an essential skill.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Life in Two Systems"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to familiarize students with the Metric and Imperial Systems, allowing them to appreciate the practical use of these measurement systems in different contexts and refine their ability to convert between the two units.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5, and each group will develop a board game with questions and challenges involving the conversion of units in the metric and imperial systems.

The game should be divided into four sections, each section representing a different scenario of everyday life where measurements are frequently used (for example, in the kitchen, during travels, in weather, in sports, etc.). Each section should contain questions and challenges related to the specific scenario.

Required Materials:

  • Cardboard
  • Colored pens
  • Dice
  • Game pieces
  • Computer with internet access for research

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Research: Each group should gather and research everyday situations involving measurements in the metric and imperial systems. They should also learn how to convert between these two systems.

  2. Game Creation: Based on the research, students will create a board game where players must correctly answer measurement conversion questions to advance. Each group should make a conscious effort to make the game fun and engaging.

  3. Writing Questions: Each group should create a set of questions (at least 20) related to the conversion of units in the metric and imperial systems. The questions should be related to the chosen scenarios.

  4. Game Testing: The groups will play and test their own games. This will give them the chance to correct and improve the game.

  5. Final Presentation: Each group will present their game to the class. They will explain the rules, show how to play, and give examples of questions. Then, they will play another group's game to get an idea of the user experience.

  6. Final Report: Each group should prepare a final report on the project, explaining the creation process and the challenges faced.

Project Deliverables

Board Game

Each group must deliver their board game for evaluation. The game will be assessed based on design, relevance and accuracy of questions, and gameplay.

Final Report

In addition to the board game, groups should submit a written report containing the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Students should contextualize the theme, explain the importance of measurement conversion in everyday life, and the project's objective.

  2. Development: Here, students should explain in detail the game creation process, including the research conducted, the methodology used, the creation of rules and questions, and the game testing. Students should also present and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: Students should conclude the work by summarizing their main points, discussing what they learned through the project, and giving an opinion on the experience of working in a team.

  4. Bibliography: Students should list all sources of information used during the project.

The final report (which can be submitted in the form of a slide presentation, a written document, or a video) will help assess students' understanding of the topic, as well as their research, writing, and teamwork skills.
