Contextualization

Theoretical Introduction

Mathematics is a fundamental discipline for critical thinking and problem-solving, and decimal numbers and fractions are basic and important concepts within this discipline. Decimal numbers are used in various everyday situations, such as in financial operations and measurements of length, weight, or volume. Fractions also frequently arise, especially when representing a quantity that is not a whole number. Furthermore, knowing how to convert a fraction into a decimal number and vice versa is a necessary skill for solving many mathematical problems.

Studying operations using decimal numbers and fractions is a natural extension of integer arithmetic. Learning to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimal numbers and fractions is a crucial step in understanding more advanced concepts like algebra. Additionally, operations with decimal numbers and fractions involve many mental processes, such as logical reasoning, memorization, attention, and mental calculation, which are highly valued skills in all areas of knowledge.

Operations with decimals and fractions are also used in more advanced contexts of mathematics and science, such as statistics and physics. For example, exponentiation of decimal numbers is a key concept in financial mathematics for calculating compound interest. Division of decimal numbers is used in determining averages in statistics. Meanwhile, square roots of decimal numbers are fundamental for understanding measures of dispersion like standard deviation.

Contextualization

Decimal numbers and fractions are present in our daily lives, whether dealing with money, measuring distances, or calculating proportions. For example, when shopping, we often need to calculate the price of products sold by weight or volume, and these prices frequently involve decimal numbers. When cooking, ingredient quantities are often expressed in fractions of cups or measuring spoons. When dividing a pizza or a cake among a number of people, we are performing a division that can result in a fraction or a decimal number.

Operations with decimals and fractions are also essential in professions such as engineering, architecture, medicine, chemistry, physics, economics, among others. Therefore, understanding and mastering these operations is an essential skill in the modern world, both for personal and professional life.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Mathematics in the Supermarket

Project Objective

The activity aims to provide a practical and realistic experience of applying knowledge about operations with decimals and fractions, promoting problem-solving skills, time management, and collaborative work.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will plan the purchase of groceries for a picnic. Each group will receive a money amount (decimal), number of participants (integer), and a list of items to be bought according to dietary choices (with prices per unit and per weight in decimals). The challenge is to buy the maximum number of items from the list without exceeding the received amount and meeting all participants' needs. Additionally, students will need to identify the savings or excess spending by converting this value into fractions and/or decimals.

The activity will allow students to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimal numbers and fractions, as well as conversions between these two types of numbers.

The groups will have one week to complete the project. It is estimated that each student will spend 2 to 4 hours to execute it.

Required Materials

  1. Sheets of paper and pencils for notes
  2. Calculators
  3. Shopping lists and prices of items (provided by the teacher)
  4. Money value assigned for the groceries purchase (fictional, provided by the teacher)

Step by Step

  1. Division of the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Distribution of shopping lists and prices of items, as well as the available amount for each group.
  3. Each group should start by analyzing the shopping list. This includes the required quantity of each item for all participants.
  4. After analyzing the list, the groups should begin calculating the expenses on the items, considering the necessary quantities for each one.
  5. Once the expense calculations are complete, the groups should check if the total is within the available budget. If not, they should adjust their purchases (either by reducing quantities or eliminating items) and recalculate until they are within the budget.
  6. The groups will then convert the final spent amount into fractions and/or decimals.
  7. After completing the practical activity, each group should prepare a detailed report of the experience.

Project Deliverables

Each group must submit a written document report containing the following topics:

Introduction: Brief description of the project, including the objective, the relevance of operations with decimals and fractions, and how these operations are used in daily life.

Development: Presentation of the theory on operations with decimals and fractions, a detailed description of how the activity was carried out, the methodology used, and the results obtained. Students should detail how the calculations were performed, how the budget was managed, and what strategies were used to keep expenses within the available amount.

Conclusions: Reflection on the learning acquired from the activity, the importance of time management and teamwork, how the acquired skills can be applied in real situations, and any additional conclusions drawn from the project.

Bibliography: List of all resources (books, videos, web pages, etc.) that the students used to carry out the project.

The written report will be the way to assess students' learning regarding operations with decimals and fractions, as well as their collaboration and time management skills. The more comprehensive and detailed the report, the better the assessment of students' learning.
