Context and Introduction

Part 1: Theoretical Introduction

Welcome to the world of applied mathematics! In our project, we will explore a very important concept: percentages. Basically, a percentage is a way to express a proportion or a relationship of parts to the whole. When we say that something is 50% of something, we are saying that this part is half of the whole.

The word 'percentage' comes from 'per cent', which means 'per hundred'. So, for example, if 20 out of 100 students in a school pass the test, we say that the pass rate is 20%.

We can also use percentages in situations where the total number is not 100. For example, if you have 2 apples and eat 1, you have eaten 50% of your apples! This is because when calculating the percentage, the ratio is always referred to a total of 100, even if the total number is different.

Part 2: Contextualization

Now, you might be wondering: why do we need to learn this? The answer is simple: we use percentages in our daily lives all the time! By understanding percentages, you can better understand discounts in stores, bank interest rates, the amount of nutrients on food labels, and much more!

For example, if a store offers a 20% discount on a product, it means that the price is reduced by one-fifth of the original value. Or if a bank offers an annual interest rate of 5%, it means that it will increase your money by one-twentieth of its value each year.

Practical Activity: 'The Great Percentage Game'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to apply the knowledge acquired about percentages in a practical and fun scenario, enhancing mathematical skills, logical reasoning, as well as social skills such as teamwork and time management.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group must create a game (it can be a quiz, a memory game, a board game, or any other idea they have) that involves the application of percentage problems. The game should be challenging enough to be played in 20-30 minutes.

The game should contain at least 10 challenges involving percentages. They can be questions about discounts on purchases, population growth, compound interest, among other topics. Be creative!

Required Materials

It will depend on the type of game each group decides to create, but some possible materials include: cardboard, colored pencils, scissors, glue, pieces from old games, among others.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Form groups and appoint a leader for each one.
  2. Discuss and decide what type of game will be created.
  3. Sketch the game plan, which should include a list of challenges and their answers, the game rules, how the game will be played, and the necessary materials.
  4. Divide tasks among group members, considering the game plan.
  5. Create the game, with all members participating in the construction of challenges and materials.
  6. Once ready, each group should play the game created by another group, noting possible difficulties and suggestions.
  7. Review the game based on the feedback received and make necessary corrections.

Project Deliverables and Written Document

After completing the practical activity, groups should present the game to the class, explaining its rules and how percentage concepts were applied. Additionally, each group should write a report on the project, following the structure below:

  • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme and relevance of this project.
  • Development: Explain the theory of percentages and how it was applied in the game creation. Describe the activity in detail, indicating the methodology used for the game construction and present the results obtained, such as the reaction of other groups while playing.
  • Conclusion: Conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn about the project.
  • Bibliography: Indicate the sources used to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This report should be submitted one week after the project begins, along with the game created.
