Understanding rational numbers and their ordering is a fundamental step in learning mathematics. Rational numbers are those that can be expressed as the ratio of two integers, with the denominator different from zero. The main characteristic of rationals is the possibility of being expressed in the form of a fraction.

The ordering of rationals is the art of organizing these numbers following logical rules. These rules are the basis for more complex operations in mathematics. Ordering is comparing quantities, therefore, it is an important prerequisite for later learning such as the four fundamental operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and their application in everyday problems.

Furthermore, rational numbers are the basis of many mathematical and scientific concepts, and are widely used in different areas of knowledge, such as physics, chemistry, engineering, accounting, and computing. They are also a fundamental part of our daily lives, as they are present in diverse situations such as measuring a distance, calculating a time, making a recipe, or analyzing a graph.

Theme Contextualization

By learning to order rational numbers, students are not only acquiring mathematical knowledge, but also developing skills in logical reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making, which are extremely useful in all areas of life.

Moreover, the ordering of rationals is a mathematical concept that has a direct practical application in many areas of everyday life. When we go shopping, for example, we need to compare prices. When we are cooking, we need to measure ingredients. And when we are planning a trip, we need to calculate distances and times. In all these cases, we are using concepts of ordering rationals.

In this sense, learning about rational numbers and their ordering is not just a matter of learning mathematics, but of acquiring a tool that can be useful in many aspects of daily life.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "The Rational Staircase"

Project Objective:

The objective is to understand, practice, and apply the ordering of rational numbers in a practical context. Students should compare and organize rational numbers and associate them with points on a staircase (representing the number line), thus demonstrating the ability of time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.

Detailed Project Description:

Groups of 3 to 5 students will create a staircase with rational numbers. Each step of the staircase will be filled with a rational number (in the form of a fraction, decimal, or percentage), chosen by the students. These numbers should be arranged in ascending order from bottom to top on the staircase. The idea is for students to first identify the rational numbers, then place them in a practical context, compare them, and finally organize them in an ordered manner.

Required Materials:

  • Cardboard or cardstock
  • Colored pens, colored pencils, or markers
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Using cardboard or cardstock, students should create the structure of the staircase. It can be a straight staircase or a spiral one.
  2. Each step of the staircase should be numbered from 1 to 15 (or more, depending on the size of the paper).
  3. Each group chooses a selection of rational numbers, which can be found in books, on the internet, or suggested by the teacher. They should be expressed in the form of a fraction, decimal, or percentage. Each group should select a greater number of rational numbers than the number of steps, in order to increase the challenge of deciding which numbers to use.
  4. The groups should discuss and decide together how to order the rational numbers, from smallest to largest, and stick them on the steps of the staircase, starting from the base.
  5. Students should check if the ordering of numbers on the staircase is correct, correcting if necessary.
  6. As a record, the group should take a photo of the completed staircase.

Project Deliverables and How They Connect to the Suggested Activities:

After completing the practice, students should write a report. The document should follow the structure: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

In the Introduction, they should explain the importance and application of rational numbers and their ordering in everyday situations. The Development should include the theory of rational numbers, and how the practical project was carried out, describing in detail each step and the methodology used, as well as discussing the results obtained. In the Conclusion, they should list the learnings, discoveries, and reflections obtained during the project. The bibliography should list the sources from which they obtained the information to carry out the project.

The final project delivery will consist of the written report and the photo of the staircase. The project will allow students to put into practice the skills learned in the classroom, while the written report will allow teachers to assess students' learning and the application of socio-emotional skills.
