Mathematics is an indispensable science for us to understand and relate to the world. One of the key concepts in mathematics is that of 'Variable x Unknown', which encompasses the representation of relationships and quantities in various situations, from simple mathematical operations to complex problems involving many elements.

In mathematics, the idea of a 'variable' is used to describe something that can vary or change. It is common to use letters to represent variables. For example, in an equation like y = 2x, both x and y are variables. This equation tells us that the value of y varies in relation to the value of x. An 'unknown', on the other hand, is a variable whose value we do not know from the beginning, but that we want to discover when solving an equation.

The idea of the 'unknown' is a bit more specific than that of the 'variable': an unknown is a variable whose value we want to discover, while a variable can vary without us necessarily being interested in discovering its value. Think of the unknown as the 'secret' we are trying to uncover, and the variable as the 'player' that changes value throughout the game and can help us uncover that secret.

Importance and Application

The ability to understand the relationship between variables and unknowns is fundamental not only for mathematics, but also for many other disciplines, such as physics, economics, and computer science. For example, in physics, we use variables and unknowns to describe the relationship between forces, velocity, and acceleration. In economics, variables represent elements such as prices, interest rates, and inflation. In computer science, variables are used in programming to store and alter information.

Knowing how to differentiate a variable from an unknown can assist in solving mathematical problems and, at the same time, contribute to the appreciation of the use of mathematics in the real world. This project aims to provide you with a better understanding of these concepts, allowing you to not only improve your mathematical skills but also prepare you for future applications in mathematics-related studies and careers.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Unraveling the Path of Variables and Unknowns'

Project Objective

The activity aims to reinforce students' understanding of the theoretical concepts of variables and unknowns, as well as their application in solving simple equations, through a playful and cooperative activity involving the resolution of puzzles.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be organized into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will receive several 'Mathematical Puzzles' that must be solved to unravel a 'Great Mystery'. Each 'Mathematical Puzzle' will be an equation involving variables and unknowns. By combining the appropriate solutions to each puzzle, they will be able to solve the 'Great Mystery'.

The 'Mathematical Puzzles' are equations of the type ax+b=c, where the unknown x must be determined. The coefficients a, b, and c will be given. The solution to each 'Mathematical Puzzle' is the unknown x, which solves the puzzle. The solutions to the 'Mathematical Puzzles' will form a set of numbers that will be used to unravel the 'Great Mystery'.

The 'Great Mystery' is a numerical code that, when deciphered, will reveal a secret message. This numerical code will be created by the teacher and shared with the students at the beginning of the activity.

Materials Needed

  • Printed equations/materials of 'Mathematical Puzzles'
  • Pencils/colored pencils for notes
  • Calculator (optional)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

  1. Each group will receive a set of 'Mathematical Puzzles' and the numerical code for the 'Great Mystery'.
  2. Students, cooperatively, must work together to solve the 'Mathematical Puzzles', guided by their knowledge of variables and unknowns.
  3. Each solution to the 'Mathematical Puzzle' will be a number corresponding to a letter of the alphabet (1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C, etc.). These numbers will be used to unravel the 'Great Mystery'.
  4. As the 'Mathematical Puzzles' are solved, students should note the corresponding solution in the numerical code of the 'Great Mystery'.
  5. In the end, the groups should have a decoded message formed by the solutions to the puzzles.
  6. At the end of the activity, each group must present in the form of a project report how they deciphered each 'Mathematical Puzzle' and the 'Great Mystery'.

After completing the practical activity, each group will be responsible for writing a detailed report, containing:

  1. Introduction: Here, students should present the importance of working with variables and unknowns, explaining how this skill applies to problem solving and equations. The project's objective should be mentioned, as well as how it relates to the theme.

  2. Development: In this section, groups should detail the theory of variables and unknowns, explaining how they were applied in solving the 'Mathematical Puzzles'. The activity should be described, the steps followed by the group in solving the puzzles and the methodology used to complete the task should be described. Additionally, indicate and discuss the results obtained, that is, the solutions to the 'Mathematical Puzzles'.

  3. Conclusion: Here, the group should revisit the main points of their work, explaining what they learned during the project and how it contributed to the understanding of the 'Variable x Unknown' theme.

  4. Bibliography: Students should indicate all sources consulted during the preparation and execution of the project, including books, websites, videos, etc.

The project will last one week, with each student dedicating between two to four hours to the activities. The project evaluation will consider the project report, the solution to the 'Mathematical Puzzles', the deciphering of the 'Great Mystery', and the group's collaboration and engagement throughout the process.
