Theoretical Introduction

Air is a mixture of gases that circulates around us and sustains life on Earth. Composed mainly of nitrogen (78%), oxygen (21%), along with a small portion of other gases such as argon (0.93%), carbon dioxide (0.04%), and traces of other gases including water vapor, the composition of air is crucial for the existence and development of different forms of life, including human beings.

The composition of air can be altered by various factors, such as pollution, burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and other anthropogenic phenomena, resulting in concerning environmental issues, such as global warming. This project aims to deepen your knowledge about the composition of air and raise awareness about the implications of human activities on its alteration.

It is also important to highlight the critical role that air plays in various physical and chemical interactions that occur in the atmosphere, such as cloud formation and rainfall, oxidation processes, among others. Therefore, understanding the composition of air and the transformations it can undergo is fundamental not only for Science but for our daily lives.

Contextualization

The air we breathe is of vital importance for our daily lives and for society in general. It allows the existence of life on our planet, enables the practice of physical and sports activities, and is essential for various industrial and technological processes. Furthermore, the degradation of air quality by pollutants has serious implications for human health and the environment, including contributing to climate change.

In this project, we will have the opportunity to explore the composition of air from a practical and playful perspective, conducting experiments, discussing its implications, and conducting research collaboratively. This initiative will not only allow us to better understand the composition of air and its role in our lives but also to raise awareness about the need for actions to preserve and improve air quality.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Exploring the Composition of Air

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to provide students with the opportunity to explore the composition of air through simple practical experiments. Through this activity, students will learn about the main constituents of air and how human activities can affect its composition.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will conduct two simple experiments that demonstrate the presence of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air. After conducting the experiments, the groups will discuss and research the relevance of these gases for life on Earth and how they can be affected by human activities.

Required Materials

  • Helium balloons
  • Candle
  • Matches
  • Glass cup
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Regular balloons

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. In the first experiment, the group will inflate a helium balloon and a regular air balloon. They will then release both balloons to observe which one rises faster. The difference in behavior will demonstrate the presence of different gases in the air.

  2. In the second experiment, the group will light a candle and cover it with a glass cup. The candle will extinguish after some time, demonstrating the need for oxygen for combustion.

  3. To demonstrate the presence of carbon dioxide in the air, the group will mix baking soda with vinegar in a cup and place a balloon over the cup's mouth. As carbon dioxide is released by the reaction, the balloon will start to inflate.

  4. After conducting the experiments, each group should research the role of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the environment and biological processes and how changes in their proportion in the air can affect life on Earth.

Project Deliverables

After conducting the experiments and research, each group should compile their findings into a report.

The report should include:

  • Introduction: Brief description of the activity and its objectives. Contextualization of the importance of air composition and its implications for life on Earth.

  • Development: Detailed explanation of the theory behind air composition and the methodology used in the experiments. Presentation and discussion of the experiment results, linking them to the theory and research conducted.

  • Conclusion: Reflection on the learnings from the activity, the role of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the environment and life on Earth, and the importance of preserving air quality.

  • Bibliography: Citation of sources used in the research, following ABNT standards.

The report presentation can be done in the form of a seminar, where all group members can participate and demonstrate their understanding of the topic studied.

All activities carried out, from conducting the experiments to writing the report, will help students acquire technical and socio-emotional skills, such as communication, problem-solving, proactivity, and time management.
