Water and Community

I. Introduction

Water is the most important and vital natural resource on the planet. It is essential for the survival of all living beings and has a number of uses, from drinking and cooking to irrigation and electricity generation. However, despite its enormous importance, the conscious and sustainable management of water resources is a continuous challenge for many communities around the world.

As such an essential asset, the relationship between water and the community is a subject of study in many disciplines, such as Natural and Social Sciences. In Natural Sciences, we study, for example, the hydrological cycle, the physical and chemical properties of water, and its relationship with living beings. In Social Sciences, the focus is on understanding how water is used by society, the management of water resources, and the impact of public sanitation policies.

Analyzing water and its role in the community can lead to important discoveries about the health of the community itself. Indicators such as the incidence of waterborne diseases or the rate of basic sanitation coverage can show a lot about the quality of life in a certain place. Studying these topics can help us find ways to improve the health and well-being of our community.

II. Contextualization

In this project, we will explore the vital role that water plays in our community. We will examine everything from how water is used to how its management influences our health and well-being. Water is more than just a basic resource for survival; it is the foundation of our economy, health, and culture.

Understanding the relationship between water and the community is essential to ensure the sustainable management of water resources and to protect public health. Inadequate water management can lead to contamination of the resource, which can result in a number of health problems, such as waterborne diseases. In addition, the lack of access to clean and safe water can exacerbate social and economic inequalities.

We are dealing with a complex and multidisciplinary subject, so we will use different sources of information during the development of our project, including:

  1. National Water Agency (ANA)
  2. Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) - Environmental Issues
  3. World Health Organization (WHO) - Water
  4. Book: "Water and the city: a multidisciplinary approach" - José Almir Rodrigues Pereira and Silvia Cristina P. Rodrigues (IBICT, 2016).

III. Practical Activity

Title: Our Water, Our Community

Project Objective:

Explore, analyze, and present the different aspects of the relationship between water and the community, encompassing the use and management of this resource and its impact on the health conditions of the population.

Project Description:

In groups of 3 to 5 students, you will carry out various activities that address water and its relationship with the community. The project consists of field research, theoretical research, and data analysis. A comparative study on the water situation in different communities will be necessary.

Necessary Materials:

  1. Notebook or computer with internet access.
  2. Camera or cell phone with camera.
  3. Notebook and pen for notes.
  4. Water quality test kit (optional).

Step by step:

Stage 1: Theoretical Research

  1. Begin with in-depth theoretical research on the water cycle, the physical and chemical properties of water, the use of water in urban and rural communities, sources of water contamination, basic sanitation, waterborne diseases, and their impact on community health.

Stage 2: Field Research

  1. Identify water sources in your community (streams, rivers, wells, reservoirs, water flow during rains, etc.). Photograph and document the conditions in which these sources are found.

  2. Interact with the local community. Find out how water is used, the problems faced, issues of basic sanitation, among other things. Keep a detailed record of these interactions.

Stage 3: Analysis and Comparison

  1. Based on your findings and data collected, discuss and compare with other communities (it could be another city, region, or even country). You can use publicly available data, such as that provided by IBGE or WHO.

Stage 4: Writing the Report

  1. Now it's time to compile all this information into a report following the structure:
  • Introduction: Write a summary contextualizing the theme, the relevance of this project, and what you expect to achieve with it.
  • Development: Here you should detail the theory researched, describe the activities carried out, the methodology used, the results obtained, and discussions. Remember to include images of the field investigations.
  • Conclusion: Restate the main points of the work, the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn about the project.
  • Bibliography: List all the sources of information consulted during the project.

Time to complete the project:

12 hours per student, which will be distributed between research, data collection, analysis, and writing the report.

The final report will be a way to document all the work done. It will allow each group to share their findings and conclusions, reaffirming the theoretical and practical learning obtained during the project.
