Title: Simulation of the Greenhouse Effect and Human Action
Project Objective
The objective of this project is for students to create a simulation of the greenhouse effect, visually demonstrating how this phenomenon occurs and how human actions can intensify it. In addition, students should research and discuss possible solutions to minimize the intensification of the greenhouse effect and climate change.
Detailed Project Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will be tasked with conducting a simulation of the greenhouse effect using simple materials and at the same time preparing a presentation addressing the following points:
- Description of the experiment and what it represents.
- Explanation of the greenhouse effect process and how it relates to the experiment.
- Identification of the main human actions that contribute to the intensification of the greenhouse effect.
- Discussion on possible solutions to minimize the intensification of the greenhouse effect and climate change.
The project will be concluded with the presentation of the experiment and the group discussion to the class.
Required Materials
For the greenhouse effect simulation, the following materials will be needed:
- Two transparent plastic boxes (the type used for storing food)
- Two 100W light bulbs (which will simulate solar energy)
- Two thermometers
- Ice cubes.
Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity
- Conducting the Greenhouse Effect Simulation:
In each of the boxes, students should:
i. Place an ice cube. ii. Close the box. iii. Position a light bulb above each box, at a distance of approximately 50 cm. iv. Record the initial temperature of each box using a thermometer. v. Turn on the light bulbs and leave them on for 30 minutes. vi. Record the temperature of the boxes every 5 minutes. vii. At the end of the experiment, compare the final temperature of each box, the rate of ice melting, and discuss the results.
- Conducting Research and Preparing the Presentation:
Each group should research the following topics:
i. Description of the greenhouse effect and how it relates to the experiment. ii. The main human actions that contribute to the intensification of the greenhouse effect. iii. Possible solutions to minimize the intensification of the greenhouse effect and climate change.
After completing the research, the group should prepare a presentation addressing these topics and also including the results of the experiment conducted.
- Project Conclusion
Each group will present to the class the experiment conducted, their research, and discussion on the greenhouse effect and human action. In addition, students must submit a written document, in the form of a report, covering the four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.
It is expected that by the end of this project, students will have acquired a deeper and more tangible understanding of the greenhouse effect, its importance for life on Earth, and the implications of human activities in intensifying this phenomenon. Furthermore, group work should help develop essential skills such as communication, collaboration, time management, and problem-solving.
