Argumentative Text

Contextualization

Theoretical Introduction

The Argumentative Text is a type of text that aims to convince the reader through arguments, which are ideas that support an opinion. This textual structure includes the introduction, development, and conclusion.

In the introduction, we briefly present the thesis, that is, the opinion that will be defended in the text. In the development, it is the moment to present arguments that support the defended thesis and, finally, the conclusion briefly summarizes what was presented and reinforces the thesis.

There are several strategies that can be used in an argumentative text to make it convincing and effective. One of them is the use of proven facts and statistical data to support the argument. Another strategy is the use of examples that illustrate the defended position. It is important that the text is clear, cohesive, and coherent to ensure the effectiveness of the argumentation.

Contextualization

Argumentative texts are present in various situations in our daily lives. Whether in an opinion article on a controversial topic, in an advertisement that aims to convince the potential consumer to purchase a product, or in the Enem essay, where it is necessary to defend an opinion consistently and coherently, argumentation is an indispensable tool.

We live in a society where information is constantly flowing, and knowing how to argue coherently and effectively is a skill that is gaining increasing importance. The ability to present arguments clearly and substantiated, identify when an argument is flawed or persuasive, are skills that go beyond the school context and are vital for the exercise of citizenship.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Arguing with Property"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to stimulate the students' development in the art of argumentation through the creation of a multimodal advertising product or a complaint/request letter. The work will be done in groups of 3 to 5 students, and the estimated duration for the development of this project is 12 hours per student.

Detailed Project Description

The students will be divided into groups, and each will have the task of creating an advertising product or writing a complaint/request letter, using their argumentation skills. Through this activity, students will be able to apply theoretical concepts of argumentation in a practical situation.

Required Materials

  • Digital resources for creating the advertising product (computer, image and video editing software, etc.) or paper and pen for drafting the letter.
  • References and research sources on argumentation techniques.
  • Notebook for recording the work stages, decisions made by the group, and reflections.

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Selection of the type of work to be developed: The group must decide whether they will create an advertising product or a complaint/request letter. The choice should take into account the relevance of the topic for the students and the school community.

  2. Research and Planning: Students should research argumentation techniques and persuasive strategies that can be used in the work. Then, the group should plan how they will employ these techniques in their work.

  3. Development of the advertising product or complaint/request letter: At this stage, students must create the advertising product or write the letter, using the argumentation techniques they researched.

  4. Review and Editing: The group must review their work, check if the arguments are convincing, if the structure of the work is coherent, and if persuasive resources were well used. It is time to edit and improve the work.

  5. Presentation of the work: The group must present their work to the class, explaining the argumentation techniques used, the challenges they faced, and how they solved them.

Project Deliverables

  1. Advertising Product or Complaint/Request Letter: This is the main deliverable of the project, where students must apply the argumentation techniques they have learned.

  2. Project Report: Students must write a report on the development of the work. In this report, students should include:

  • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, relevance in the real world, and the objective of the work.
  • Development: Explanation of the argumentation theory used, details about the activity, the methodology employed, and presentation of the results.
  • Conclusion: Recapitulation of the main points, lessons learned, and conclusions drawn about the project.
  • Bibliography: Indication of the sources used for research and work development.

The purpose of this report is to complement the practical work, where students will show argumentation in action, with the theoretical, discussing and reflecting on the argument elaboration process and the techniques used. The report should be clear, concise, and show the connection between theory and practice, as well as the group's evolution during the project development.
