Punctuation: The Use of the Comma

Contextualization

The comma is a punctuation mark that plays several roles in the Portuguese language, such as marking pauses, separating elements, establishing interpositions, and isolating explanatory or corrective expressions. The comma is one of the most used punctuations and has a great influence on the construction of the meanings of a sentence. Its improper use can cause ambiguity or incoherence in the communication of thoughts.

The correct use of the comma is an essential skill for writing and understanding texts. The mastery of this skill helps in other areas of life, such as preparing reports, building arguments, and understanding complex texts. In addition, the ability to use the comma correctly is a sign of a good reader and writer.

Introduction

The use of the comma is surrounded by rules and exceptions in Portuguese. Its correct application requires a deep understanding of these rules and their continuous practice. A well-placed comma can change the whole meaning of a sentence, while a badly placed comma can cause great misunderstandings. In addition, the use of the comma also helps to give rhythm and fluidity to the text, making it easier to read and understand.

In this project, we will delve into the study of the use of the comma. We will have a practical and playful approach, with activities that will challenge the teamwork and creativity of the students. In addition, we will also contextualize the use of the comma in different contexts, demonstrating its relevance in everyday life.

Practical Activity - "Comma In Action!"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to develop the ability to use the comma correctly in texts and at the same time, apply the learning about the use of the comma in varied contexts.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people and must create a "Comma Game", with rules, challenges, and steps that require the correct use of the comma. The project will be multidisciplinary, involving Portuguese and arts, because, in addition to creating the content of the game, students will be responsible for its art and design. The project is expected to be developed over three weeks.

Necessary Materials

  • Cardstock or cardboard for the game base
  • Cards for questions and challenges
  • Pieces or markers for the players
  • Colored pens, pencils, markers, etc., for the artistic part of the game
  • Ruler, scissors, adhesive tape

Detailed step-by-step for carrying out the activity

  1. Week 1 - Planning: Students should meet to discuss the rules of the game, the challenges, and how the use of the comma will be incorporated. They should decide the dynamics, whether it will be a board game, a card game, a challenge and reward game, etc.

  2. Week 2 - Construction and Development: Students begin building the game, developing both the art and the content of the questions, challenges, and answers. Don't forget to create an instruction manual explaining how the game works!

  3. Week 3 - Testing and Refinement: Students will do playtests to make sure everything is working as planned. They should refine and adjust the gameplay based on their tests.

  4. Project Delivery: After finishing the construction of the game, each group must present it to the rest of the class in an exhibition. In this exhibition, each group should explain the rules of the game, how it is played, and how the comma is used.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, in addition to presenting the game, each group must submit a written report containing:

  1. Introduction: It should include the contextualization of the project, presentation of the game created, its relevance and application in the real world, and the objective of the project.
  2. Development: The group should explain the theory of comma usage, detail the methodology used in creating the game, and present the results obtained in the tests.
  3. Conclusion: The group should conclude the work by summarizing the main points, explaining what learning was obtained, and presenting the conclusions of the project.
  4. Bibliography: Here the group should present the research sources that were used to carry out the project.
