Verb: Nominal Forms and Mood Inflections

Contextualization

The Portuguese language, one of the most spoken in the world, is full of peculiarities that make it special. Verbs, with their varied forms and inflections, are a great example of this. Learning about these nominal forms and verb inflections is essential for developing the ability to express ourselves in a correct, clear, and efficient manner.

Verbs, in Portuguese, can be divided into three nominal forms, which are: infinitive, gerund, and participle. These forms are used to express an action in its appropriate tense, mood, and voice, adding depth and complexity to our language that is lost in translations.

Regardless of the career we choose, whether it be in writing, business, law, medicine, engineering, or any other profession, mastering verb forms is crucial. This is because all of these careers require effective communication, and understanding how verbs work and flex is allows us to be more precise and effective in conveying information and ideas.

Introduction

At the heart of all sentences in Portuguese lies the verb. Verbs are words that indicate action, state, or natural phenomena and can be inflected in mood, tense, person, number, aspect, and voice. Mode inflections, in particular, are a way to express the speaker's attitude towards the verb's action. They can be indicative (to express real facts), subjunctive (to express uncertainties, possibilities, or hypothetical actions), or imperative (to express commands or requests).

The nominal forms of the verb, on the other hand, are those where the verb is not personalized (that is, it does not show number and person inflections). These forms are the infinitive, gerund, and participle. They are used to express an action in general terms, without relating it to a specific time or person. They are essential for the formation of compound tenses and verbal periphrases in the Portuguese language.

Practical Activity

Title: "Exploring the world of verbs: their nominal forms and mode inflections"

Project Objective:

This activity aims to expand students' understanding of the nominal forms and mode inflections of verbs in the Portuguese language, through a practical and creative approach.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will be responsible for creating a "Verb Game." This is a board game where the squares represent different challenges related to the nominal forms and mode inflections of verbs. For example, a square may require the player to conjugate a verb in the subjunctive mood, while another square may ask the player to identify the nominal form of a verb from a given sentence.

Required Materials:

  • Cardboard or cardboard for the base of the board
  • Markers, colored pencils, ruler, and scissors
  • A4 paper for challenge cards
  • Pieces to represent the players (they can be small objects, such as buttons)

Step by Step:

  1. Each group should draw a path with squares on the board, which will be traveled by the players. The path can be in a straight line, zigzag, or spiral format.
  2. Each square should be colored according to the type of question it represents: one color for nominal forms (infinitive, gerund, participle) and another color for mode inflections (indicative, subjunctive, imperative).
  3. Next, the students should create the challenge cards. Each card should contain a question or prompt related to a verb and should correspond to one of the chosen colors.
  4. Each group should create the rules of the game, including how a player moves on the board, how they respond to challenges, and how a winner is determined.
  5. Finally, the groups should test the game, making adjustments as necessary.

Project Deliverables:

After completing the activity, each group must submit a written report containing:

  • Introduction: Here, students should contextualize the theme, explain the relevance of the nominal forms and mode inflections of verbs, and state the project's objective.
  • Development: Should contain the theory on the nominal forms and mode inflections of a verb, a detailed description of the activity, including the execution method, and the rules of the created game.
  • Conclusions: Students should summarize the main points discussed in the report, mention the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.
  • Bibliography: Indication of the sources used for theoretical foundation and activity development.

Remember: the report should be done collaboratively, with all group members contributing equally to its completion.

Note:

The game execution should not be included in the estimated time for project execution, as it is part of the work verification process and final product testing.
