To understand Portuguese well, it is important to comprehend the difference and relationship between these two concepts: phrase and clause.

A phrase is constituted by a complete unit of meaning, which can be expressed by one or more words. However, a phrase does not necessarily need to contain a verb, for example: 'Silence!'. On the other hand, a clause is a unit of meaning that has a verb or a verbal phrase. For example, in the sentence 'João read the book', we have a clause, as it has a subject (João), verb (read), and complement (the book).

These definitions may seem technical and distant from our reality, but they are the basis of all our written and spoken communication. Without phrases and clauses, there is no way to convey thoughts, give orders, ask questions, express feelings, and much more.

Importance

Understanding the difference and relationship between phrases and clauses is vital when reading and interpreting texts, as well as being crucial for textual production. The more you understand about phrases and clauses, the more precision you will have in your communication.

The structure of phrases and clauses is also of great importance for the formal norm of the Portuguese language, being required in formal situations such as entrance exam essays, public contests, and academic writing.

Practical Activity: Journal of Phrases and Prayers

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to assist in the understanding of the concepts of phrase and clause, as well as their structures, through the study of their everyday use, encouraging critical analysis and textual production by students.

Project Description

Students should form groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for creating a 'Journal of Phrases and Prayers', where they should record different types of phrases and clauses found in various media sources (books, magazines, websites, etc.) or in everyday life (dialogues, interactions, etc.)... When collecting these phrases, the group should analyze and classify whether the expression is a phrase or a clause, identify its parts (when applicable), and explain why it is a phrase or a clause.

Required Materials

• Paper for the journal construction (can be a kraft paper sheet, notebook, etc.)
• Colored pens
• Books, magazines, internet access, etc. (for researching phrases and clauses)
• Glue and scissors (optional, if you want to personalize the journal)

Project Step by Step

1. Form the group and discuss the importance of the activity and how it will be carried out.
2. Choose the paper that will be used as the journal. Personalize the journal with drawings, collages, etc.
3. Start researching phrases and clauses. If the phrase or clause is taken from a printed media, cut and paste it in the journal. If it is from a digital media, write it in the journal.
4. For each phrase/clause, the group should make an analysis identifying if it is a phrase or a clause. If it is a clause, identify its parts (subject, predicate, complement).
5. Don't forget to write the source from where the phrase/clause was taken.
6. The group should carry out this activity until completing the journal with a sufficient number of examples (we suggest at least 20 examples).
7. Finish the activity with a group discussion about what they learned and how this activity helped understand the topic.

At the end of the project, the journal should be submitted to the teacher, along with a written report containing the following topics:

1. Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance, and the project's objective.
2. Development: Detailed description of the activity, explanation of the theory behind the concepts of phrase and clause, the method used for identification in the collected phrases and clauses, and the results obtained.
3. Conclusion: Summarize the main points, present the acquired learnings, and the conclusions drawn from the project.
4. Bibliography: Indicate all sources that the group relied on to work on the project, including books, web pages, videos, etc., used to extract the phrases and clauses.

Remember: the journal and the report should be a collective work, where everyone contributes equitably.
