The comma is one of the most important and at the same time one of the most challenging elements of Brazilian grammar. The comma may seem like a small detail, but it has the power to change the entire meaning of a sentence, potentially leading to misunderstandings if misused.

In the real world, writing is one of the most relevant means of communication. Whether in writing an email, a report, a request for help, a book, or news. Clarity in written communication is essential for the message to be conveyed correctly. The correct structuring of sentences and proper punctuation are essential for a written message to be understood correctly.

The comma has many functions and rules, but two main functions can be highlighted:

1. Separate elements that have the same syntactic function. Ex: I bought bananas, apples, and pears.

2. Isolate elements that do not have the same syntactic function as the others. Ex: Maria, the girl who just arrived, is my friend.

Practical Activity: "The Hunt for the Comma"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is for students to delve into the rules of comma usage in the Portuguese language through practical situations, encouraging them to work in teams and develop research, analysis, and writing skills.

Project Description

In the activity "The Hunt for the Comma," students, in groups of 3 to 5 people, should find and analyze texts of different genres (news, short story, opinion article, poetry, etc.), identifying the use of the comma and justifying its appearances based on grammar rules.

Required Materials

• Books, magazines, newspapers, and/or internet access for text research.
• Notebook and pen for analysis recording.
• Computer with word processing software for the final report preparation.

Step by Step

1. Group formation and role division: each team member should have a clear responsibility (researcher, analyst, writer, proofreader, etc.).

2. Research: groups should search for texts of different genres that contain the use of the comma.

3. Analysis: after the research, groups should read and analyze the texts, identifying and justifying the use of the comma in each of them.

4. Writing: after the analysis, groups should write a report that should include:

• Introduction: contextualization on the importance of the comma in writing and project objectives.
• Development: detailed exposition on the theory of comma usage, description of activities performed, presentation of analyzed texts, justification, and discussion of results obtained.
• Conclusion: reflection on the significant role of the comma in text comprehension and lessons learned.
• Bibliography: reference to the analyzed texts and materials used for theoretical foundation.

5. Revision: a group member (the proofreader) should critically read the report, correcting possible errors and ensuring the quality of the work.

6. Presentation: groups should present their reports to the class, sharing their findings and learnings.

The total duration of this activity should be approximately 5 to 10 hours of work per student, which can be divided into several sessions over a month.
