Nation-states are fundamental elements in the construction of the global political, social, and economic scenario. To understand their formation and economy, it is important to review certain central concepts such as: State, nation, territory, government, and country. These concepts are intrinsically linked and are often used interchangeably, although they have important nuances.

The State is a political entity that has sovereignty, which means it has supreme authority over its territory and is not subject to higher entities. A nation, on the other hand, is a group of people with a shared sense of identity, usually based on common characteristics such as language or culture. Thus, a nation-state is where a State and a nation coincide, that is, where a government has sovereign control over a territory that houses a specific group of people with a common identity.

Importance of Nation-States

The formation of nation-states has shaped the map of the world as we know it today and has a great influence on international relations, the global economy, and geopolitics. With processes of colonization, decolonization, and territorial conflicts, nation-states with different formats and sizes, resources, and populations have emerged.

The economy of nation-states is also a fundamental theme. Each country has a unique economic organization that defines how its resources are managed and distributed. This organization can range from a free-market economy to a planned state economy, passing through different combinations between these extremes.

The economies of nation-states are not isolated islands, they are interconnected by international trade, foreign investments, and capital flows. Therefore, understanding the economy of a country involves knowledge of the global economy and international economic relations.

Activity Title: "Building a Nation-State"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to deepen the knowledge about nation-states, their formation, and their economy. Students will simulate the creation of a new nation-state, developing its political, economic, and social system. This will allow students to apply and test their understanding of the discussed concepts.

Detailed Project Description

The project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will create its imaginary nation-state, taking into account geopolitical, economic, and sociocultural aspects.

Each group should:

1. Develop the history and culture of their nation-state: How and when was it formed? What is its history? What language(s) is spoken? What are its traditions and customs?

2. Define the geography and natural resources of their nation-state: Where is it located? What are its main natural resources and how do they influence the economy?

3. Organize the economic system of their nation-state: Is it a market economy, planned economy, or mixed economy? What are its main industries and export products? How is wealth distributed? What are its economic policies?

4. Establish the political system of their nation-state: What is the form of government? How are political decisions made? What are the rights and duties of citizens?

5. Identify the main challenges and opportunities for the nation-state: What are the main external threats (e.g., conflicts with other nation-states) and internal threats (e.g., social inequality, corruption)? What are the opportunities (e.g., alliances, unexplored natural resources)?

For the completion of this project, students will need:

1. Internet access for research.

2. Paper and pen for notes and sketches.

3. Presentation software (such as PowerPoint or Google Slides) for the final presentation.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Completion

1. Group Formation and Initial Research (2 hours): Groups are formed, and students initially discuss what they know about the concepts of State, nation, territory, government, and country. They begin researching these concepts and choose a country in the world as their main inspiration.

2. Development of History and Culture (2 hours): Groups work together to develop the history and culture of their nation-state. They should be creative but also realistic, ensuring that their history and culture reflect the reality of the world.

3. Definition of Geography and Economic Organization (2 hours): Groups discuss and define the geographical location and natural resources of their nation-state. They also discuss and define how their economic system works.

4. Establishment of the Political System (2 hours): Groups establish the political system of their nation-state, including the form of government and the rights and duties of citizens.

5. Identification of Challenges and Opportunities (2 hours): Groups identify the main challenges and opportunities for their nation-state. They discuss how these can affect the economy and politics of their nation-state.

6. Preparation of the Presentation (2 hours): Groups prepare a 10-minute presentation about their nation-state, which will be presented to the class.

7. Presentation and Discussion (1 hour): Each group presents their nation-state to the class. After each presentation, there is a brief discussion period where other students can ask questions and provide feedback.

8. Report Writing (2 hours): Each group writes a detailed report on the project, which should include an introduction contextualizing the theme and the project's objective, a development part where the theory, practical activity, methodology used, and results obtained are detailed, a conclusion where the learnings obtained and the project's conclusions are explained, and finally, the bibliography used.

At the end of the project, students will have a broader understanding of nation-states, their economies, cultures, and geopolitical dynamics, as well as develop skills in research, teamwork, presentation, and report writing.
