This integration takes place through the creation of economic blocs, whose main objective is to promote economic and political integration among member countries.

Latin American economic blocs are associations of countries that have economic cooperation agreements with the aim of increasing competitiveness, economic and political development and improving the quality of life of their citizens. Mercosur, the Andean Community, the Pacific Alliance, the Central American Integration System and ALBA are examples of blocs present in Latin America.

The study of these blocs is essential to understand the geopolitical dynamics of the region, the economic and commercial relations between countries and the processes of regional integration and cooperation. In addition, knowledge about Latin American blocs can help to understand the reasons behind government policies, business decisions and investment opportunities in different sectors and countries.

Practical Activity – Blocs in Hand: The Construction of Latin American Economic Blocs

Project Objective

To understand the role of Latin American economic blocs, identifying the specific characteristics of each, their main productive activities and the importance of world organizations in their context of cultural and economic integration.

Detailed Project Description

The groups (of 3 to 5 students) will be in charge of building a "map-mural" representing one of the Latin American economic blocs. This map mural should contain, in addition to the physical map of the bloc, information on the main productive activities of the member countries, the activities of world organizations in their processes and an analysis of this information.

Students must research the chosen economic bloc, collecting information on its formation, objectives, main challenges and impacts. They must also identify the main productive sectors of each member country and how they interrelate within the bloc.

Groups should strive to complete the project around 5 to 10 hours per student, over the course of a month.

Required Materials

1. Card stock (or any other material for the map mural)
2. Colored pens, pencils, markers
3. Computer with internet access for research
4. Reference books and materials on Latin American economic blocs

Detailed Step-by-Step to Carry Out the Activity

1. Students should form groups of 3 to 5 members.

2. Each group will choose or be assigned a Latin American economic bloc to research.

3. Students will begin by researching the bloc, collecting information on its formation, the objectives of integration, economic, cultural and political characteristics of the member countries.

4. Next, each group should research and identify the main productive activities of each member country and how these activities are interlinked within the bloc.

5. Each group will create a map-mural, which will graphically and textually represent the information collected in their research. They should use colors and symbols to represent the different aspects and characteristics of the bloc.

6. In addition to the map-mural, each group must write a report that must contain: an introduction to the topic, development (theory behind the central theme, detailed activity, methodology used) and conclusions drawn about the project. The report should also present the bibliography used.

At the end of the project, the group will present their research and map-mural in front of the class, explaining the characteristics, productive activities and the importance of the economic bloc they studied. The map-mural and the report will be the project deliverables.
