America, through its different regions and historical periods, brings an incredible plot of cultural diversity, spatial mobility, and struggles for independence. European colonization and subsequent movement for liberation have significant and lasting impacts on our current societies, influencing vital aspects such as economy, politics, culture, and demography.

The colonization of America began in the late 15th century with the arrival of Christopher Columbus, funded by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain. This beginning marked an era of intense exploration and colonization by European powers, mainly Spain, Portugal, France, and England. The indigenous peoples who already inhabited the continent experienced drastic changes in their lives, including the loss of lands, the transmission of diseases, and forced conversion to the Christian religion.

However, the 18th century saw the emergence of independence movements throughout America. Inspired by European Enlightenment, the wars of independence in Latin America and the American Revolution in the north mark a period of seeking autonomy and self-determination.

Introduction

Understanding these critical phases of the Americas' history is essential to comprehend current society and its complexities. This project will focus on two key concepts: the European colonization of America and the subsequent struggles for independence.

European colonization shaped the geographical and demographic configuration of America, with the implementation of borders, cities, and government systems. At the same time, contact with European peoples caused significant social and cultural changes among American indigenous peoples.

The movements for independence, in turn, marked a break with European domination and allowed the formation of independent nations with their constitutions and governments. Understanding these movements is crucial to grasp how the American continent evolved into what it is today.

Activity Title: The Journey from Colonization to Independence

Project Objectives

Explore and deeply understand the two fundamental concepts: the colonization of America by Europeans and the subsequent struggle for independence. Develop socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, time management, effective communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity.

Detailed Project Description

Students, organized in groups of 3 to 5 members, will represent a specific country in America during the colonization and independence periods. Each group will research and produce a detailed presentation covering the colonization, the impact on indigenous peoples, and the struggles for independence in the selected country. The presentation must be accompanied by a detailed written report.

Groups will also be challenged to produce a physical map of the country they chose, highlighting the main geographical features and how these influenced colonization and the struggle for independence.

• Paper, pencils, and markers for map creation
• Presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.)

Activity Step-by-Step

1. Group Formation: Students will form groups of 3 to 5 people each.

2. Country Selection: Each group will select a specific country in the Americas to research and focus on during the project.

3. Research: Each group will research the history of their selected country, focusing specifically on colonization by Europeans, the impact on indigenous peoples, and the struggle for independence. Research sources should be noted for later reference in the bibliography.

4. Creation of the Physical Map: Based on their research, each group will create a physical map of their chosen country, highlighting the main geographical features and how these features influenced colonization and independence.

5. Preparation of the Presentation and Report: Each group will prepare a 20-minute presentation detailing their research, accompanied by a written report. The presentation and report should include the following topics:

   • Introduction: The context of the chosen country during colonization and the struggle for independence. The relevance and application of the theme in the contemporary world.
   • Development: The theory behind the colonization and independence themes. A detailed description and discussion of the research results, including the methodology used.
   • Conclusion: Recap of the main points, highlighting the learnings and conclusions about the project.
   • Bibliography: The reference sources used in the project.

6. Project Presentation to the Class: Each group will present their findings to the class. During the presentation, students should be ready to answer questions from their classmates and the teacher.

Each activity step may take between 5 to 10 hours per student to complete, so it is crucial for students to manage their time well and evenly distribute tasks within the group.

Project Delivery:

1. Physical Map of the Country: Must be legible, colorful, and with all geographical features and relevant elements clearly marked.

2. Oral Presentation: Must include all key points of the research, be cohesive, and last about 20 minutes.

3. Written Report: Must follow the proposed structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography. Must contain a detailed discussion of the colonization and independence themes, the activity in detail, the methodology used, and the results obtained.

4. Participation and Engagement in Class during the presentations of other groups, asking questions, and contributing to the discussion.

The project will be delivered to the teacher and presented to the class within one month after the start of group work.
