Sets: Introduction

Context

Introduction

Mathematics is a discipline that permeates all areas of life, from simple counting to advanced engineering calculations. One of the fundamental concepts of Mathematics is that of a 'set'. A set is a collection of elements that share one or more common properties. This abstract definition can be brought into the real world in various ways. For example, a set can be a group of people of the same age, a set of cars of the same color, or a set of integers.

Sets are fundamental for organizing and understanding the world around us. Through them, we can categorize, classify, and organize information, facilitating the understanding and solution of problems. Furthermore, set theory is the basis for many other mathematical concepts, such as numbers, functions, probability, among others.

Context

Although it may seem like an abstract topic at first glance, sets are present in our daily lives. By separating your clothes by color, organizing your books by genre, classifying your music by artist, you are creating sets. This concept is present in virtually all disciplines, from Biology to Computer Science. In the field of mathematics, sets are used to represent information and perform operations.

In the digital world, sets are present in the databases that feed the applications and websites we use daily. These databases are organized into sets of information that are manipulated to provide relevant results to the user. For example, when you perform a search on an online search engine, the system organizes the information into sets and performs operations of intersection, union, and difference to provide the most relevant results for your search.

Practical Activity

'Unveiling Sets through a School Soccer Tournament'

Project Objective

This project aims to deepen students' understanding of the concept of sets in Mathematics, through the organization of a fictional soccer tournament. Additionally, it also aims to develop teamwork, time management, and communication skills.

Detailed Project Description

The project will consist of organizing and managing a fictional soccer tournament, where students will create teams, organize matches, and deal with variables such as wins, draws, losses, and scoring. The teams, matches, and results will be treated as different set elements, which in turn will be subject to operations of union, intersection, difference, and complementarity.

For this, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will be responsible for organizing a part of the tournament. There will be a round for each group to present their part of the tournament, and in the end, all groups will work together to compose the tournament as a whole, respecting the established rules.

Required Materials

  • Paper and pen for notes and sketches.
  • Computer with internet access for research and preparation of the final document.
  • Text editing and spreadsheet software (Ex: Microsoft Office, Google Docs, etc).

Step by Step

  1. The class will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Each group must appoint a leader, who will be responsible for the group's organization and meeting deadlines.

  3. Each group must create a plan for the organization of their piece of the fictional soccer tournament. This plan should include the list of teams, game schedule, and a system to calculate points based on wins, draws, and losses.

  4. The plans of each group will be discussed in class to ensure that they are all compatible and that the final tournament will be cohesive.

  5. The groups will then start implementing their plans, creating the teams and organizing the matches.

  6. After the 'games' are played, each group must create a leaderboard based on the results.

  7. At the end of the process, the groups will merge their leaderboards to form the final tournament leaderboard.

  8. Each group must then prepare a final report detailing the process and explaining how set theory was applied in practice.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver the following as a result of the project:

  1. Leaderboards for each stage of the tournament.
  2. Final tournament leaderboard.
  3. Detailed final report.

The final report should be written in a structured manner and cover the following topics:

  • Introduction: the student must contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application as well as the objective of this project.
  • Development: the student must explain the theory behind the central theme of the project (sets), detail the activity, indicate the methodology used (based on the organization and management of a fictional soccer tournament), and present the results obtained during the project.
  • Conclusion: the student must conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained (both technical and socioemotional), and drawing conclusions about the project.
  • Bibliography: the student must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
