Algebraic Expressions

Contextualization

Mathematics is a discipline that can provide us with a unique and profound insight into the universe we live in. One of its most powerful tools is algebra, which is essential for the study of equations, functions, geometry, and many other branches of mathematics. This project is dedicated to the study of algebraic expressions, an essential part of algebra.

An algebraic expression is a combination of variables, constants, and mathematical operations. Variables are symbols, usually letters, that represent an unspecified quantity. Constants are fixed values, such as numbers. Mathematical operations include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponentiation, and radical extraction. A solid understanding of algebraic expressions is fundamental to progress in any mathematical study.

In our project, we will explore algebraic expressions in detail, including how to form them, manipulate them, and apply them to real-world problems. We will work with key concepts such as terms, coefficients, polynomial degree, and operations with algebraic expressions.

Algebraic expressions have practical applications in numerous areas, from physics and engineering to economics and biology. For example, when developing a video game, programmers can use algebraic expressions to determine trajectories of moving objects. In medicine, algebra is used to calculate medication dosages and interpret clinical test data.

Mathematics does not exist in isolation; it is related to many other disciplines. In this project, we will also explore connections between mathematics and the Portuguese language through problems and activities that encourage critical thinking, text interpretation, and argumentation.

Practical Activity: "The Great Algebraic Treasure"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to deepen their knowledge of algebraic expressions through a practical activity involving problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork. Additionally, the project will also work on socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.

Detailed Project Description

Form groups of 3 to 5 students. Your challenge is to unravel "The Great Algebraic Treasure," an adventure full of mathematical riddles that will challenge your knowledge of algebraic expressions and problem-solving skills.

The riddles are hidden in various "Challenge Stations" that you must go through solving the riddles and puzzles to advance to the next one. Each station will represent a key concept in algebraic expressions: forming expressions, basic operations with expressions, expressions with radicals, and solving equations from algebraic expressions.

You will be evaluated not only by solving the expressions but by your ability to work as a team, organize your time, and present your strategies and solutions clearly and coherently.

The project has an estimated total duration of 12 hours per student, so organize yourselves to divide the work well!

Necessary Materials

  • Notebook or paper for notes
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Computer with internet access
  • Camera to document the process (optional)

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Form a group and organize a schedule for the project. Remember that time management is essential for the project's success.

  2. Access the project's website (provided by the teacher) and start the challenge at the first Challenge Station. Each station will present a riddle or problem related to a key concept of algebraic expressions.

  3. Solve the riddles using your algebra knowledge. Each solved riddle will lead to a code that must be entered on the website to move to the next station.

  4. Document the entire resolution process and discussion among the group. This will be useful in preparing the final report.

  5. Upon completing all Challenge Stations, you will find "The Great Algebraic Treasure." Congratulations!

  6. Finalize the project by writing a detailed and well-structured report on the experience, including the discussion and solution of each Challenge Station, the difficulties encountered, how they were resolved, and what was learned along the way.

Project Deliverables

The final project deliverable will be the report written by the students, which should follow the following format:

  • Introduction: Students must contextualize the theme of algebraic expressions, their relevance and application in the real world, in addition to the project's objective and how it was carried out.

  • Development: Here, students must describe the theory behind algebraic expressions, detail the methodology used to solve the riddles, as well as present and discuss the results obtained.

  • Conclusion: In this section, students must indicate what they learned from the experience, which skills were developed, what difficulties they encountered, and how they were overcome.

  • Bibliography: Finally, students must cite all sources of information used to solve the riddles and understand the concept of algebraic expressions.

Remember, the main goal of the project is to learn and develop socio-emotional skills, so enjoy the experience!
