Ballroom Dancing

Introduction and Contextualization

Introduction

Ballroom dance is a form of social dance performed by a pair of dancers. Generally practiced by people with skills ranging from beginner to professional, ballroom dance has its origins in Western culture, but has evolved and spread throughout the world, influenced by local traditions and cultures.

The term 'ballroom dance' encompasses various dance styles, each with its own peculiarities. In general, these styles share a common language of movement, involving interaction between the dancers and the music, and the use of the space around them. Some of the most common styles include tango, salsa, forró, samba, bolero, among others.

Mastering ballroom dance involves much more than just learning dance steps. It requires an understanding of underlying techniques, including how to maintain balance, how to move in harmony with a partner, and how to interpret the music. It also requires a willingness to experiment and adapt to the music and partner.

Contextualization

Ballroom dance has practical and cultural relevance in today's world. It is a form of artistic expression, a form of physical exercise, and a way to connect with other people. In many cultures, ballroom dances play an important role in celebrations and social rituals.

Furthermore, ballroom dance can be an effective way to learn about other cultures. Through dance, students can gain a deeper appreciation of cultural and historical diversity. Dance can be seen as a universal language that transcends borders and cultural barriers.

Ballroom dance is also relevant in an educational context. It develops motor skills, coordination, rhythm, concentration, and teamwork. Additionally, it is an activity that stimulates creativity and emotional expression.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Dancing Around the World - The Discovery of Ballroom Dances

Project Objective

This project aims to provide students with the opportunity to investigate the richness and variety of ballroom dances. Through this project, students will research the origins, specific movements, music, and characteristics of a particular style of ballroom dance. They will then prepare a presentation that includes a dance choreography and a theoretical presentation.

Detailed Project Description

This project, to be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students, involves bibliographic research, planning and execution of a choreography, and preparation of a theoretical presentation. It should be completed within a month, and it is estimated that each student will spend between five to ten hours on the project.

Students should choose a style of ballroom dance and conduct thorough research on this style, including its history, country of origin, associated music, typical movements, traditional clothing, and any other interesting aspects. Each group should choose a different style to avoid repetitions.

The result of this project will be a presentation that includes a dance demonstration and a theoretical presentation. The dance presentation should be a choreography that the group members will plan and practice together. The theoretical presentation will explain the information that the group discovered in their research.

Necessary Materials

  • Internet access for research
  • Adequate space for dance practice
  • Comfortable clothes for dancing
  • Sound system to play the chosen dance music
  • Presentation equipment (computer, projector)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Group Formation: Students will form groups of 3 to 5 people.

  2. Choice of Dance Style: Each group will choose a style of ballroom dance to be the focus of their project.

  3. Research: With the chosen dance, students will research about the style. They should look for information about the dance's history, country of origin, associated music, typical movements, and traditional clothing.

  4. Choreography Planning: Based on the research, the group will plan a choreography that represents the chosen dance style. They should consider the music, movements, and spirit of the dance.

  5. Choreography Practice: Group members will practice the choreography together until they feel comfortable with the dance.

  6. Preparation of Theoretical Presentation: Alongside choreography practice, the group will prepare a theoretical presentation. This presentation should include all the information they discovered in their research.

  7. Final Presentation: The group will perform their presentation for the class. The presentation should include the dance demonstration and the theoretical presentation.

Project Deliverables

After the final presentation, each group should prepare a written document with the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Contextualizing the chosen dance style, its relevance, its real-world application, and the project's objective.

  2. Development: Explaining the theory behind the dance style, detailing the activity carried out, the methodology used, and the results obtained. Also include images, graphics, and/or video links that help illustrate the work done.

  3. Conclusions: Summarizing the main points of the project, explaining what was learned about ballroom dance, and the conclusions about the project.

  4. Bibliography: Indicating the research sources used.
