Theoretical Introduction
The universe is a vast wonder that has attracted our curiosity since time immemorial. At the center of this fascination is our natural satellite, the Moon. The only celestial body besides Earth to be visited by humans, the Moon has always been an object of human species, enchanting us with its beauty and mystery. But what do we really know about the Moon?
The Moon is our natural satellite and orbits around the Earth every 27.3 days, a movement known as sidereal rotation. However, for the Moon to go through the same phase (new Moon to new Moon, for example), it takes about 29.5 days, which we call a synodic month. This phenomenon is caused by the Earth's translation around the Sun.
The phases of the Moon are a direct result of the relative position between the Moon, Earth, and the Sun. During its phases - new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter - the Moon presents us with distinct illuminated faces, forming what we call Moon phases. Eclipses, in turn, occur when the Moon, the Sun, and the Earth are aligned, and can cause two types of events: solar eclipse and lunar eclipse.
Contextualization
Observing the Moon is not only a mystical and poetic activity, but also a way to better understand our own planet and our place in the universe. The Moon has played a fundamental role in the evolution of Earth and continues to affect our world in ways we do not always perceive. Through detailed study of the Moon and its phases, we can learn about fundamental physical processes.
Furthermore, by understanding the phases of the Moon and eclipses, we are applying fundamental concepts of Physics and Astronomy that are essential for understanding many natural phenomena and modern technologies. The study of the Moon also helps us develop important skills such as observation, analysis, critical thinking, and teamwork.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: "Exploring the Moon: Phases, Eclipses, and Celestial Models"
Project Objective
The project aims to provide students with a practical and theoretical understanding of the phases of the Moon and eclipses, exploring the relative positions between the Sun, Earth, and Moon. The proposal involves the construction of models, observing the Moon in the sky, and preparing a scientific report. Effective collaboration between group members will be necessary, and skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking will be highly valued.
Detailed Project Description
The project will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students and will last approximately three weeks. The activity will be divided into three main parts: research and theoretical study, construction of models and practical observation, and report writing.
Research and Theoretical Study
Students will conduct in-depth research on the Moon, its phases, lunar and solar eclipses, and the relative position between the Sun, Earth, and Moon. The goal is to solidify theoretical understanding before moving on to the practical part.
Construction of Models and Practical Observation
The groups will build two models:

Moon Phases Model: Students will create a three-dimensional model representing the phases of the Moon. This model should clearly illustrate each of the phases and show how the relative position of the Moon, Earth, and Sun affects the appearance of the Moon as seen from Earth.

Eclipses Model: Students will make another three-dimensional model simulating a lunar and solar eclipse.
After building the models, students will observe the Moon in the sky during different lunar phases, recording their findings.
Report Writing
Finally, students will need to write a detailed report on the project, which will include the topics of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

- Styrofoam balls of different sizes (representing the Sun, Earth, and Moon)
- Barbecue sticks
- Fluorescent paint (for painting the Moon phases)
- Cardboard or wood (for the base of the models)
- Binoculars or telescope (for Moon observation)
- Paper and colored pens (for report writing)
Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution
- Conduct detailed research and studies on the Moon, its phases, and eclipses.
- Build a model representing the Moon phases. Use the styrofoam balls to simulate the Sun, Earth, and Moon, and paint the Moon phases on the ball representing it.
- Build another model simulating a lunar and solar eclipse.
- Observe the Moon in the sky during different phases and record your observations.
- Gather your findings and acquired knowledge and start writing your report. The report should include an introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography.
Project Deliverables
At the end of the project, each group must deliver the following:
