Background

The Moon is the only natural satellite of Earth and one of the most observed celestial bodies throughout human history. Since ancient times, the Moon has been a source of fascination and inspiration, featuring prominently in myths, stories, and rituals.

The Moon influences the Earth in various ways, the most visible one being the tides driven by its phases. Moreover, studying the Moon helps us better understand the origin and evolution of rocky planets, including our own Earth.

It is easy to observe the Moon and its phases from anywhere on Earth. The Moon goes through eight distinct phases over a period of about a month. Additionally, at certain times, the Moon, Earth, and Sun align in such a way that results in a lunar or solar eclipse.

Introduction

The Moon is the closest natural satellite to Earth, and studying it provides a window into the solar system. In this project, we will delve into the study of Moon phases and eclipses, two key concepts in astronomy.

Studying Moon phases involves understanding the relative positions of Earth, Moon, and Sun and how they result in the appearance we see in the night sky. Eclipses, on the other hand, involve the passage of the Moon, Earth, or their shadows across each other.

Our overarching goal is to develop a deeper understanding of these natural processes and learn how to observe and record them. We believe that by actively engaging in the study of these phenomena, students will not only learn key theoretical concepts related to them but also develop important skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Hands-on Activity: Observing and Modeling the Moon

Project Objectives:

  1. Observe and record Moon phases over the course of a month.
  2. Build a three-dimensional model that represents the relative positions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon, and that can explain Moon phases and eclipses.
  3. Prepare a report documenting the entire process from observation to model building.

Project Outline:

This project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students. It will involve two main stages: observing and recording Moon phases, and constructing a model to explain these phases and eclipses.

Materials Required:

  1. Observation journal (can be a simple notebook).
  2. Pencils or pens.
  3. Styrofoam or clay balls of varying sizes (to represent the Sun, Earth, and Moon).
  4. Barbecue skewers.
  5. Paint or colored markers (optional).

Step-by-Step Procedure:

  1. Observing the Moon: Over the course of a month, groups will observe the Moon, preferably at the same time each night. They should sketch the appearance of the Moon in their observation journals and note the date and time. It is important to also record the nights when the Moon is not visible.

  2. Building the Model: Using the materials provided, groups will construct a three-dimensional model that represents the relative positions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon. The Sun will be represented by the largest ball, Earth by the medium-sized ball, and the Moon by the smallest. The balls should be attached to barbecue skewers in a way that allows them to be moved to represent the Moon's movement around Earth, and Earth's movement around the Sun.

  3. Experimenting with the Model: Using the model, groups will try to replicate the Moon phases they observed by moving the "Moon" around the "Earth," while also rotating the "Earth" around the "Sun." They should also experiment with aligning the three bodies to create eclipses.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of the month, each group will submit:

  1. Their observation journal with all the recorded Moon phases.

  2. Their three-dimensional model.

  3. A report in the form of a written document that should include:

    • Introduction: A brief background on the topic, explaining the significance of the Moon and eclipses, and the project objectives.
    • Body: A detailed description of the Moon observation and model construction, including an explanation of the theoretical concepts involved (Moon phases, relative positioning of the Sun, Earth, and Moon, and eclipses). It should also present and discuss the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: A summary of the project's main points, what was learned, and the conclusions reached.
    • Bibliography: References for resources used for the project.

Students should ensure that the report clearly explains how observing the Moon and manipulating the model helped in understanding Moon phases and eclipses. Additionally, the report should demonstrate the group's collaboration and learning throughout the project.
