Punctuation is a fundamental element in constructing meaning in a text. It consists of a set of graphic symbols whose basic function is to represent, in writing, the pauses and intonations of speech. Furthermore, the correct use of punctuation is essential for the message of the text to be correctly interpreted by the reader.

We can understand the importance of punctuation when we realize that a simple comma can change the entire meaning of a sentence. For example, the sentence "I don't want to know" has a completely different meaning from "No, I want to know." In the first sentence, the speaker is refusing some information, while in the second one, he is excusing himself to later affirm that he wants to know something.

Mastering punctuation marks is essential for writing and reading texts in various situations of our daily lives: from writing a letter, through composing an email or a report, to reading news or a book.

Studying punctuation is, therefore, more than just a grammatical discipline: it is an essential tool for expressing ourselves correctly and understanding what we read. In a world where writing is fundamental for communication, mastering punctuation means having the key to making oneself understood and understanding others.

Practical Activity: "Building Meaning with Punctuation"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with an educational experience that goes beyond punctuation theory, combining knowledge of the Portuguese language with text production and audiovisual language. The idea is that students can understand and correctly apply punctuation marks, as well as understand their importance in constructing the meanings of texts.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people to carry out the project. Each group must develop and produce an educational video, lasting between 10 to 15 minutes, explaining and exemplifying the use of at least four types of punctuation marks of their choice, including the theoretical explanation of the use of each mark, practical examples, the representation in speech of each mark, and how punctuation influences the construction of text meanings.

The video should have a clear, objective, and didactic language, allowing students to use their creativity to choose the video format (such as a news program, a play, a TV show, a documentary, etc.). Therefore, the work will not only involve the discipline of Portuguese but also that of Arts, as students will have to develop scenic aspects and video production.

Required Materials

Groups will need:

1. A device for video recording (such as a smartphone or a digital camera).
2. Material for script production (paper, pen, computer, etc.).
3. Internet access for research.
4. Textbooks and/or grammars for consultation.

Detailed Step-by-Step

1. Group division: Each group should consist of 3 to 5 students.
2. Selection of punctuation marks: Each group must choose at least four punctuation marks to study and present in the video.
3. Research: Groups must conduct in-depth research on the chosen punctuation marks, their application, and importance. Diverse sources should be consulted, such as textbooks, grammars, and educational websites.
4. Script development: Groups must create a detailed script for the video, including the theoretical and practical information to be presented, the scenes to be recorded, the setting, the characters, etc.
5. Video recording: With the script ready, students should produce the video according to the planned schedule.
6. Video editing: If necessary, the video should be edited to adjust timing, improve image and sound quality, add titles, subtitles, etc.
7. Report writing: In addition to the video production, groups must write a report in the form of a document reporting in the format of a report containing, but not limited to, four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

Project Deliverables and Evaluation Criteria

Groups must deliver the produced video and the written report. Both will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

1. Educational video: The quality of the content presented (clarity, correctness, relevance), the quality of video production (images, sound, settings, characters), creativity in presenting the content, and compliance with the stipulated time.
2. Written report: In the Introduction, students must contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project. In the Development, students must explain the theory behind the chosen punctuation marks, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained. In the Conclusion, students must conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project. In the Bibliography, students must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
