The imperative is the verbal mode used to express orders, advice, requests, pleas, invitations, or even instructions. In our daily lives, it is more common than we imagine. When a mother tells a child 'Don't run in the street,' or a teacher tells a student 'Don't forget about the homework,' they are using the imperative. Written instructions, such as instruction manuals, recipes, and even some laws, also frequently resort to the imperative.

The imperative has two forms: affirmative ('Do this') and negative ('Don't do this'). In this project, we will focus on the negative form, as it presents interesting peculiarities. In the Portuguese language, the negative imperative is formed from the present subjunctive and is used to express a negation of order, advice, or request.

Relevance of the Negative Imperative

The correct use of the imperative, especially in its negative form, is fundamental for clear and respectful expression of orders, requests, or instructions. Effective communication in these situations, whether in writing or speaking, is essential, whether in informal contexts, such as at home or with friends, or in formal contexts, such as at work or school.

Furthermore, knowledge and mastery of the negative imperative is an important step in understanding and correctly using the Portuguese language as a whole. Understanding the grammatical rules helps to avoid common errors, improves fluency in reading and writing, and contributes to the formation of individuals better prepared to express themselves and argue coherently and convincingly.

Practical Activity: 'Composite Sketch'

Project Objectives

Project Description

In this activity, students must create a 'Composite Sketch' using the negative imperative. The 'Composite Sketch' is a text that describes a real or fictional person or character, outlining their behavior, actions, and lifestyle through negative orders. The goal of this activity is for students to apply the negative imperative creatively in a real and interesting context.

Required Materials

1. Paper and pen/pencil for drafting.
2. Computer with internet access for research and finalizing the work.

Activity Step-by-Step

1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
2. Each group must choose a character - real or fictional, known or created by the group.
3. After choosing the character, students must think of actions, behaviors, attitudes, and other elements that characterize this character and translate them into negative orders.
4. Write a first version of the 'Composite Sketch.' This version should be written by hand to promote engagement and collaboration among group members.
5. After the first version, students should use the computer to type and review the text. They must ensure that all orders are in the negative imperative and that the text flows naturally and interestingly.
6. Finalize the final version of the 'Composite Sketch' and prepare the presentation for the class.

The project will last up to one month, with the estimated individual dedication between 5 to 10 hours.

At the end of the project, in addition to presenting the 'Composite Sketch' to the class, each group must submit a written report containing the following topics:

2. Development: Explain the process of creating and writing the 'Composite Sketch.' Highlight group decisions, such as how they chose the character's characteristics and how they turned these characteristics into negative orders. Also discuss any difficulties encountered and how they overcame them.
3. Conclusions: Summarize the main points of your project and discuss what you have learned. This should include the application of the negative imperative in writing and how teamwork was carried out.
4. Bibliography: Indicate the sources that helped the team during the project, including books, websites, videos, etc.

In each of these sections, the group should make an effort to apply the negative imperative. Remember, the goal is not only to understand how the negative imperative is formed and used, but to be able to apply it effectively and correctly.
