Conjunction

Contextualization

A conjunction is one of the most important word classes in grammar because it is what allows us to connect sentences, expressions, or even words in such a way as to create coherent and cohesive texts. They are essential in the construction of our messages, whether written or oral, allowing us to create relationships of meaning within the text, which are essential for its comprehension.

There are two main types of conjunctions: coordinating and subordinating. Coordinating conjunctions establish a link between coordinated sentences, that is, between sentences that have the same syntactic importance in the text. Subordinating conjunctions, on the other hand, connect subordinate clauses to a main clause, establishing a relationship of dependency between them.

Relevance of Conjunctions

Conjunctions are essential parts of text construction. They help to create relationships of cause and effect, sequence, opposition, comparison, and many others, making the text clearer and easier to understand. Imagine a world without conjunctions - our texts would become a series of disconnected sentences, losing a lot of fluency and making communication considerably more difficult.

Conjunctions are even more important when we think about arguments and persuasive texts. In order to create solid arguments, we need to clearly show the relationships between our ideas, and conjunctions are essential tools for this. Therefore, their comprehension and correct use are important skills for anyone who wants to express themselves efficiently and coherently.

Practical Activity: "Connecting Ideas"

Project Objective

To immerse oneself in a practical and playful way in the study of conjunctions, understanding their main functions and characteristics, and developing skills in their identification and their adequate use in texts.

Project Description

The students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will have the task of creating a "Book of Conjunctions", where everyday situations requiring the correct use of conjunctions will be presented. The situations should be constructed in such a way as to show the importance of conjunctions and the effects of meaning they can convey.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard for making the books;
  • Colored pens, colored pencils, or materials for illustrating the book;
  • Supporting texts for research and study;
  • Computer with internet access for research.

Step-by-Step Project

  1. Study of conjunctions: Using the suggested didactic resources, the students should study the concepts of coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.

  2. Brainstorming of situations: In groups, the students should think about everyday situations where we commonly use conjunctions. These situations will be the stories in the book.

  3. Creation of the script: With the situations defined, the next step is to write the script for these situations, applying the correct use of conjunctions. The variety of conjunctions in the text should be ensured.

  4. Illustration and layout: After defining the script, the students will illustrate and lay out the stories in book format.

  5. Review and finalization: Students should review their work, ensuring coherence, cohesion, and that the use of conjunctions is correct. Then the book is finalized.

  6. Presentation: Each group should present their book to the class, explaining the situations and the use of conjunctions in each one.

Project Deliverables

  1. Conjunction Book: The main deliverable of this project is the book created by the students, which will be evaluated in terms of text quality, correct use of conjunctions, creativity, and presentation.

  2. Project report:

    • Introduction: The students should contextualize the theme, explain its relevance and application in the real world, and the objective of this project.

    • Development: Here, the students explain the theory of conjunctions, show in detail the activity they carried out, indicate the methodology they used, and present and discuss the results obtained.

    • Conclusion: The students conclude the work by reviewing their main points, explaining the learning obtained, and the conclusions about the project.

    • Bibliography: Indicate the sources that were used to work on the project: books, web pages, videos, etc.

The report should be submitted in digital format, with the text well-structured and revised. It will be evaluated in terms of text quality, understanding of the theme, application of the same in the activity, and quality of reflection on the learning carried out.
