Verb: Indicative Mood

Context

The Indicative is one of the three verbal moods in Portuguese. It is used to indicate a real, definite, true fact that occurred, is occurring, or will occur. Within the indicative mood, we find different tenses such as the present, the past, and the future.

Analyzing the way a verb is used allows us to better understand the message being conveyed. For example, an action can be described as something that happened (past), is happening (present), or will happen (future). Each of these tenses brings with it nuances and perspectives that enrich our communication.

Learning to correctly identify and use verbs in the indicative mood is an important step in improving our writing and reading skills. By mastering this concept, we will be able to express our ideas more clearly and accurately.

The indicative mood is present in various aspects of our daily lives. When we read a newspaper, for example, most of the articles use the indicative mood to report on events that have happened. We also commonly find this mood in biographies, novels, and scientific texts.

Understanding the indicative mood is essential not only for our daily communication but also for interpreting texts and producing writing in various fields of knowledge. After all, this is how we can distinguish whether an action is definite, possible, or a command.

Practical Activity: "The Indicative Mood Quiz"

Project Objective

The project aims to deepen students' knowledge of the Indicative Mood through a playful and collaborative activity, stimulating creativity, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

Detailed Project Description

Students will create and play their own board game called "The Indicative Mood Quiz". The board will be divided into squares, where each square will represent an action. When landing on a square, the player must conjugate a verb in the Indicative Mood, according to the action indicated on the square.

Necessary Materials

  • Cardboard or poster board to make the game board.
  • Colored paper, markers, and pencils to decorate and detail the game board.
  • Small objects or pieces from other games to be used as player markers.
  • Die.

Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Groups of 3 to 5 students should come together to plan and create the game board.
  2. The game board should be divided into squares, where each square will contain a description of an action in the present, past, or future tense.
  3. Each player, on their turn, rolls the die and moves their marker the number of squares indicated on the die.
  4. When landing on a square, the player must conjugate a previously agreed-upon verb in the Indicative Mood, according to the action indicated on the square. For example, if the action is "past" and the verb is "to run", the player must say "I ran".
  5. The other players must check the answer. If it is correct, the player remains on the square; if it is wrong, they go back to the previous square.
  6. The game ends when one of the players reaches the end of the game board. The player who reaches the end first is the winner.

Project Submission

After completing the activity, students must prepare a written document with the following structure:

  1. Introduction: In this section, students should present the project's objective, the importance of the Indicative Mood, and how the practical activity helped achieve that objective.
  2. Development: Here, students should detail the game creation process, explain its rules, and describe how the game helps to understand the Indicative Mood. A discussion of the results should also be included, explaining who won the game and why.
  3. Conclusion: Students should reflect on what they learned from the project, how it will help them in the future, and what challenges they faced during the project's implementation.
  4. Bibliography: Students should list the research sources used to develop the game.

The documents must be submitted within one week of the practical activity.
