Contextualization
Introduction
Intertextuality is an important and widely used resource in literature and various other types of texts. This resource is defined by the relationship that a text (oral or written) maintains with other texts, whether contemporary or not. This relationship is established through references, allusions, or mentions of other texts or previous discourses.
In the literary universe, intertextuality allows a text to gain new meanings when related to others, enriching the reading and interpretation of them. The concept of intertextuality is widely explored in modernity because from it, new meanings can be created, criticisms can be made, works or authors can be honored, among other things.
For a better understanding of intertextuality, knowledge of various texts, contexts, and cultures becomes necessary, since the different degrees of intertextuality can range from simple allusions to the complete or partial appropriation of a text for the creation of another.
Contextualization
The use of intertextuality is not restricted only to literature. It is also widely used in cinema, music, advertising, among others. This happens because intertextuality allows richer and more complex connections between ideas, enabling the construction of deeper and more comprehensive discourses.
In the real world, the ability to identify intertextuality can become a powerful tool for analyzing and understanding many aspects of contemporary culture. Its practice allows you to become aware of the different voices, discourses, and texts that are interacting in the text you are reading or listening to.
By understanding the concept of intertextuality, students will be able to appreciate the depth and complexity of the texts they read, as well as become more critical and insightful readers.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: "Tracking Intertextuality: A Literary Adventure"
Project Objective:
The activity aims to identify and analyze examples of intertextuality in literary works and produce a written report detailing their findings and analyses.
Detailed Project Description:
Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will be tasked with exploring different literary works (which can be poems, short stories, novels, plays, etc.), movies, music, and even advertisements. They will seek examples of intertextuality in each of these types of media. Once identified, they will analyze how each example influences the understanding of the text and whether it is an allusion, quotation, paraphrase, among others.
Required Materials:
- Books, magazines, newspapers, internet texts.
- Internet access for research and viewing of movies, music, and advertisements.
- Paper and pen/pencil for notes.
- A computer or tablet for the elaboration of the written report.
Step by Step:
- Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
- The groups must choose at least 3 different forms of media (books, movies, music, advertisements, etc.) to explore.
- Within each chosen media, the groups must identify at least 3 examples of intertextuality.
- For each example, students must record:
- Where it was found (Name of the book/movie/music, author and page, if applicable)?
- What type of intertextuality is this (allusion, quotation, paraphrase, etc.)?
- How does the example affect the understanding of the text?
- After identifying and analyzing the examples, each group must prepare a written report that includes:
- Introduction: Contextualize the theme of intertextuality, its relevance in the real world, and the project's objective.
- Development: Explain the theory of intertextuality, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and present and discuss the examples found and their analyses.
- Conclusion: Recap the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.
- Bibliography: Indicate the sources used to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
The project will take two to four hours per student to be executed and will have a deadline of one week after the activity presentation.
By the end of the project, students should have acquired the following technical skills: Analyze the meaning effects resulting from the use of intertextuality mechanisms, understand what intertextual relationships are, and time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
