Linguistic Varieties: Tú and Vos

Contextualization

When studying the Portuguese language, we come across various linguistic nuances, including in the use of the pronouns of address 'tu' and 'vós'. The use of such pronouns varies according to the region, social context, and time, thus being known as a linguistic variety.

The correct use of the pronouns 'tu' and 'vós' is a matter that involves verbal regency and is also linked to the formality and informality of communication. This reflects the richness and complexity of our language, making the topic relevant and interesting to study.

Introduction

The pronoun 'tu' is used in the second person singular and the pronoun 'vós' in the second person plural. In European Portuguese, the use of 'tu' and 'vós' in verbal conjugation is more common and regular. In Brazilian Portuguese, this form of usage is found more frequently in specific regions, such as Rio Grande do Sul and Pará, and less common in other regions, which usually use 'você' and 'vocês' instead of 'tu' and 'vós'.

Nevertheless, the use of 'tu' and 'vós' is taught in many schools as the correct and formal way to communicate in Portuguese. Therefore, it is important that we understand these differences and their applications so that we can express ourselves appropriately and respect the linguistic varieties of our language.

Practical Activity

'Tu and Vós on Stage: Exploring Linguistic Varieties'

Project Objective

The project's objective is to explore the linguistic varieties of Portuguese, focusing on the use of the pronouns of address 'tu' and 'vós', and correlating them with verbal regency. Through the creation of a theatrical video, students will demonstrate different ways of using these pronouns in different social contexts, regions, and historical periods.

Detailed Project Description

Students will divide into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group should develop and present a script for a theatrical scene video lasting 5 to 10 minutes, where the use of the pronouns 'tu' and 'vós' should be highlighted in different situations, regions, and historical periods. The video should contain dialogues and situations that demonstrate the correct use of the pronouns and the corresponding verbal conjugation.

The groups should research the topic, structure the scene's script, and carry out the filming. The video production can use real or virtual scenarios, depending on the students' resources.

Required Materials

  • Research materials: Books, internet, videos.
  • For recording: Smartphone or camera, scenarios, and costumes.
  • For video editing: Video editing software (several free options available).

Step-by-Step Guide for Carrying Out the Activity

  1. Engage in research on the use of the pronouns 'tu' and 'vós' in the Portuguese language, focusing on their linguistic variety. Each group member should contribute to the research.

  2. Write the script for the theatrical scene based on the research conducted. The script must be approved by all group members.

  3. Assign roles among the group members. Ensure that everyone has an active part in the scene.

  4. Prepare the necessary scenario and costumes for filming.

  5. Record the video.

  6. Edit the video using video editing software.

  7. Review the final video with all group members before submitting it.

Project Deliverables

Students must submit the produced video and a written document in the form of a report, containing:

  1. Introduction: The student must contextualize the topic, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

  2. Development: The student must explain the theory behind the use of the pronouns 'tu' and 'vós', detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: The student must conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.

  4. Bibliography: The student must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This project will allow students to reinforce their understanding of the linguistic varieties of Portuguese. Furthermore, this project will help them develop socio-emotional skills, such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
